One month is in the books in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball slate, and this coming weekend will mark the start of conference play.
This past weekend saw limited action throughout the conference, as Morgan State and Coppin State co-hosted the Charm City Classic in Baltimore, Md. Delaware State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T State, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State were all a part of the action as well.
Coppin State, Morgan State and North Carolina A&T State each picked up two wins over the weekend, while Norfolk State defeated South Carolina State on Saturday for its first win of the season. Delaware State and North Carolina Central also each won a match over the weekend in Baltimore.
Howard went 2-0 this past week, defeating both UMBC and North Carolina A&T State in straight sets at home.
Coppin State's Miajavon Coleman and North Carolina A&T State's Courteney Pitt were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week, while North Carolina Central's Arlanda Faulkner earned Rookie of the Week honors. Howard's Fola Wilson was named Defensive Specialist of the Week, and Brianna Lang of Coppin State was named Setter of the Week.
Three teams will be in action on Tuesday in non-conference action, as Coppin State, Howard and North Carolina Central will all be on the road. South Carolina State will be on the road on Wednesday.
Preseason Northern Division favorite Maryland Eastern Shore -- and Preseason Player of the Year Lucia Babic -- will return to action after a week's hiatus on Friday, hitting the road to face rival Delaware State. Howard, the three-time defending MEAC champion, will open MEAC play on Friday at home against Morgan State.
Southern Division preseason favorite Bethune-Cookman will be in Durham, N.C. on Friday to open conference play against North Carolina Central, while Florida A&M, which tied the B-CU for the division crown in 2017, will be in Greensboro, N.C. to take on the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State.
Four conference matches are on the docket for Sunday.
The top four teams in each division at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2018 MEAC Volleyball Championships, which will be held at Howard's Burr Gymnasium Nov. 16-18.
