Savannah State Falls At UAB In Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A 21-point second quarter was the difference as Savannah State dropped its 2018 season opener at Alabama Birmingham on Thursday night.

UAB scored on its opening drive in 10 plays but Savannah State buckled down with an interception on its first defensive possession of the year followed by a fumble recovery on special teams. However, SSU was unable to capitalize on offense as the quarter came to an end down 7-0.

The contest took an unfortunate turn for the Tigers during a five-minute span in the second quarter. UAB went ahead 14-0 after an interception return for a touchdown and upped its lead to 21-0 following its second interception which led to a five-play, 43-yard scoring drive with 4:55 remaining. SSU punted after its ensuing possession and UAB scored in six plays to close the half ahead 28-0.

UAB tackled on three additional touchdowns and a field goal in the second half en route to the win.

Rashad Saxton led SSU with 46 yards on the ground while Isaiah Bennett and Mulik Simmons each had nine tackles.
