MEAC Volleyball Entering Busy Second Week of 2018

All 12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball programs will be in action this week, as Norfolk State and Savannah State both open their 2018 campaigns.

North Carolina A&T State holds the conference's best record after the first weekend of regular-season play, sitting at 3-0 for the first time since 1996 thanks to wins over Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jackson State this past weekend. The Aggies, picked to finish third in the Southern Division this season, will take on Elon on Tuesday in their only match of the week.

The Aggies took three of the MEAC's four weekly honors, as Courteney Pitt was named Player of the Week, Lily Walton earned Rookie of the Week honors and Edie Brewer was named Setter of the Week. Florida A&M libero Valentina Carrasco was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.

Howard, the three-time defending MEAC champion, also had a successful open to 2018 this past weekend, defeating George Washington and George Mason before falling to Wichita State in four sets. The Bison will be in action again on Monday, playing host to Stanford, the No. 1 team in the nation, in Burr Gymnasium.

Howard will then head to Beaumont, Texas this weekend for a tournament at Lamar University.

Bethune-Cookman, the preseason favorite in the Southern Division, opened its 2018 campaign with a four-set win over Texas Southern. The Wildcats will keep it in-state this weekend, competing in the Florida Atlantic Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.

Savannah State will open on the road against Charleston Southern on Tuesday, while Norfolk State's 2018 will kick off on Friday in a tournament hosted by Georgetown.
