NCAA Division I Google Cloud Academic All-America Softball Teams
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State softball player Seana Moriarty added yet another academic honor to her resume, and this time it is perhaps the most recognizable academic award in collegiate athletics. The outgoing senior was named today to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team for Division I softball.
She earned a spot on the Academic All-America second team after finishing her career in the classroom with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Each of the first, second and third teams consisted of 11 players and were voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Moriarty was one of four infielders on the second team, three of whom carried 4.0 GPAs.
Last month, Moriarty was named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District® 3 Team. She was then placed on the ballot for the Academic All-America teams. Thanks to today's honor, she becomes the first D-I Academic All-American for NSU in the sport of softball and the third ever for the school in any sport.
On the field, Moriarty batted .269 this year with 21 runs, four doubles, five home runs, 21 RBI and 13 walks while playing in every game. The team's starting shortstop and a preseason All-MEAC selection this year, she set the school record for career sacrifice hits with 31 while also ranking 10th all-time at NSU in doubles. She missed only one game during her four-year career.
Moriarty graduated last month with a degree in applied mathematics. As a senior, she was named the NSU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third year in a row. She has also been named to the MEAC All-Academic Team, the AD's Honor Roll, the VaSID Academic All-State Team and the NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete Team during her time at NSU.
She was a member of the NSU Honors College, Chi Alpha Sigma, the NSU Math Club, DNIMAS (Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences) and the Golden Key Honour Society.
To be eligible for the CoSIDA academic honors, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve for their team. Nominees must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one calendar year at his or her institution.
