QUANTICO, Va.—Several Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) coaches participated in the U.S. Marine Corps Leadership Coaches Workshop this past Thursday through Saturday at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Among those who participated were Howard head softball coach Lauren McCoy, Savannah State head women’s tennis coach Carolina Lainez, Savannah State head volleyball coach Edric Poitier, North Carolina Central assistant volleyball coach Emma Celentano, Coppin State assistant women’s basketball coach Carnell Arrington, Coppin State women’s associate head coach Jazmone Turner and Norfolk State assistant women’s basketball coach Morra Gill.

In all, approximately 50 collegiate coaches from across the country participated.

The Coaches Workshop was a three-day (May 17-19) intensive leadership workshop designated to teach coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small unit leadership (tactics, techniques and procedures). Heading into 2018, more than 75 coaches had participated in the Coaches Workshop program across different sports including: basketball, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, volleyball and golf.

The event allows coaches to get a small taste of what it takes to become a Marine Corps Officer and to develop a culture of leadership within their teams.

These workshops invite college-level teachers, coaches, administrators and influencers to learn about the aspirational and competitive selection process for Marine Corps Officer candidates, their entry-level training and the opportunities presented to them by virtue of their service to the nation.
