Weekly Softball Release: April 10

WEEKLY NOTES

MEAC softball begins week 10 as the Northern and Southern Divisional races are taking shape.

The Hampton Lady Pirates and the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers were predicted to win the MEAC softball Northern and Southern Divisions, respectively. Florida A&M has won four consecutive MEAC Championships while Hampton has two championships all-time.

The Northern Division race is extra tight as Morgan State and Delaware State are tied (7-2) while Hampton sits three games back due to its series with Delaware State moved back to the final week of the season due to weather. Delaware State and Morgan State are scheduled for a showdown this weekend in Baltimore.

Florida A&M dropped its first MEAC game of the season last week versus North Carolina A&T State. A Bethune-Cookman loss at North Carolina Central kept the Wildcats from gaining ground as FAMU is still two games ahead. FAMU heads to third-place Savannah State while BCU travels to South Carolina State this weekend.

Reigning MEAC Player of the Week Ava Dolan of North Carolina Central leads the MEAC with a .474 av- erage in addition to driving in 31 RBI with 36 hits and 18 runs. Hampton’s DaSha Hill follows with a .453 aver- age, 39 hits, 30 stolen bases and 24 runs scored. Coppin State freshman Nia Bowe ranks third with a .446 aver- age, 33 hits, 28 RBIs and 17 runs.

Courtney Mirabella of North Carolina Central is obliterating opposing batters with 194 strikeouts followed by Coppin State’s Madison Didion (111) and Florida A&M’s Kyaira Brown (92). Brown leads the MEAC with 11 wins total.

The 2018 MEAC Tournament takes place once again in Ormond Beach, Fla. as Bethune-Cookman will host the tournament. The top four teams from each division make the conference tournament.
