MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors

Bethune-Cookman’s Iesha Waters and Savannah State’s Cortni Jones were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Co-Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Morgan State’s Amy Begg and North Carolina Central’s Courtney Mirabella were named Co-Pitchers of the Week while Howard’s Breanna Robinson and Savannah State’s Tanisha Williams have earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors.
 
Waters (1B, Sr., Riverside, Calif.) batted .600 (6-of-10) with six RBI, five runs, three doubles, two stolen bases and two sacrifice flies as Bethune-Cookman swept Florida A&M for the MEAC’s Southern Division title. Waters also had a strong day in the field with a total of 30 putouts and an assist.
 
Jones (3B, Jr., Snellville, Ga.) finished the week with a .778 average while tallying seven hits, seven RBI, five runs and drawing two walks. She also had two doubles, a triple and a home run while stealing a base. She went 2-for-3 in the first two games at South Carolina State while closing the series out with a 3-for-3 outing which saw her fall a home run short of the cycle. She also added nine assists in the field.
 
Begg (P, Sr. Christchurch, New Zealand) had another flawless week as she finished 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She struck out 12 batters with a pair of complete game shutouts as batters only hit .125 against her. She helped Morgan State clinch the MEAC’s Northern Division on Saturday with a shutout before returning to action on Sunday with a one-hit, six-strikeout shutout over rival Coppin State which also included her 500th career strikeout.
 
Mirabella (P, Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) led the MEAC with 18 strikeouts while compiling a 2-0 record over weekend as North Carolina Central clinched a berth in the upcoming MEAC Championships. She allowed one run in two appearances with a 0.50 ERA. On Sunday, Mirabella threw a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.
 
Robinson (C, Fr., Buena Park, Calif.) had the fourth-highest batting average (.600) in the MEAC this past week as Howard recorded a series sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore. She also had a .636 on-base percentage while scoring three runs, recording four RBI, three doubles and a stolen base. She had two hits in all three games against the Hawks.
 
Williams (P, Fr., Covington, Ga.) won both of her starts this weekend while finishing with a 0.00 ERA and holding batters to a .093 average. She struck out five batters while only allowing one run and four hits total.

 
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Alexis Bermudez (Bethune-Cookman) picked up three wins in the series versus Florida A&M while posting a 1.20 ERA and allowing only three runs with three strikeouts in 11.2 innings of action.
 
Madison Didion (Coppin State) struck out 15 on the week with an ERA of 1.10 while recording a shutout.
 
Jade Dixon (Norfolk State) finished with a .333 average while tallying four hits, three runs, two RBI and two doubles.
 
Claire Eosso (North Caroline Central) went 6-for-8 to lead NCCU’s offense in a three-game sweep of rival North Carolina A&T State and clinched a spot in the 2018 MEAC Tournament. Eosso was a perfect 3-for-3 in a 4-1 win, 1-for-2 in a 3-0 win and 2-for-3 with two RBI in a 6-3 win.
 
Kylee Lopez (Norfolk State) batted .333 in five games and set Norfolk State’s single season home run record with 14. She also had a pair of multiple hit games against Longwood and Hampton.  
 
Megan Przeslawski (Norfolk State) went 2-1 on the week with six strikeouts. She had a pair of wins versus Hampton to keep Norfolk State’s postseason hopes alive.

Mackenzi Steele (Howard) combined for 14 strikeouts with a 2-0 record and two runs allowed in the series versus Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Damali Young (Morgan State) batted .750 with six hits, three runs scored, a double, triple and four stolen bases to add to her school record 96 stolen bases in a key series win over Coppin State.
