MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 18, 2018Morgan State senior Danielle Thompson was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Hampton’s Yulia Kapitanova was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Thompson (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas) was a perfect 3-0 in singles play this past week, while also going 2-1 in helping the Lady Bears secure the Northern Division’s No. 2 slot. She dominated Tinashe Gwaze of Coppin State 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles spot, before taking a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Hofstra’s Jasmine King and a 6-3, 6-3, victory against Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic.
 
Kapitanova (Fr., Moscow, Russia) went 3-1 in singles play this past week, while also notching a perfect 3-0 record in doubles action. She opened the week with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Brianna Gibbs of George Mason in the No. 2 singles spot, before she moved to the No. 1 spot to defeat Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. She also won 6-0, 6-0 against Coppin State’s Tinashe Gwaze – while also winning doubles matches against George Mason, Norfolk State and Coppin State.
 
Other Top Performers
Rehaana Butt (B-CU) picked up a doubles victory in the No. 1 position against Florida A&M.
 
Matea Roki (B-CU) defeated Florida A&M’s Mia Rakotondrazafy 6-4, 7-5 after pairing with Butt to secure a 6-4 doubles victory.
 
Haley Mullins (HAM) went 3-1 in singles play, notching wins against George Mason, Norfolk State and Coppin State.
 
Asmara Faluke (MSU) posted dominant singles wins against Hofstra and Norfolk State in the No. 6 singles spot.
 
Paula Fortuno (NSU) defeated Morgan State’s Alexus Gill 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
