DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman women's basketball joyously and thankfully added a new team member Monday.
Head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis and Eric Lewis welcomed their second son, Brice Robert, at 1:09 p.m. at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Brice weighed in nine pounds and was 20 1/4 inches long.
The team is in Norfolk, Va. for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament and was on its way to practice at the time of delivery.
The Lady Wildcats face either Maryland Eastern Shore or Delaware State in a quarterfinal Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Assistant coach Chandler McCabe will handle coaching duties for the game. McCabe led the Lady Wildcats to wins over Coppin State and Morgan State on Feb. 17 and Feb. 19, respectively.
If Bethune-Cookman wins on Wednesday, Blair-Lewis will rejoin the team for Friday's semifinal against either Hampton, Morgan State or Coppin State.
"Coach literally gave a pep talk to the doctors and nurses in the delivery roo… of course," McCabe said. "We are so happy for Coach and Eric and celebrate with them. We already had enough motivation coming into this tournament, this simply adds to it."
Blair-Lewis garnered an unprecedented third consecutive MEAC Women's Coach of The Year and her fourth overall -- also unprecedented -- after leading Bethune-Cookman to a program-best 23-5 regular season record. The Lady Wildcats finished atop the MEAC standings for the third consecutive year. During the season, B-CU was ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 for the first time in program history.
