Maryland Eastern Shore Upends Rival Delaware State in MEAC Tourney

NORFOLK, Va., March 6, 2018 –
Maryland Eastern Shore, the No. 7 seed, had four players score in double figures in a 77-60 first-round win over No. 10 seed Delaware State in women’s first-round action in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament at Norfolk Scope Arena.
 
The Hawks will face No. 2 seed Bethune-Cookman in Wednesday’s quarterfinal at around 2 p.m.
 
Alexus Hicks led the way with 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers, while Ciani Byrom added 17 points. Keyera Eaton poured in 12 points and Martha Thompson added 11.
 
The Hawks shot 43.2 percent from the floor in the second half and 39.4 percent for the game.
 
Delaware State actually had control early, taking a 19-9 lead on a Genell Addison layup at the 2:19 mark. But the Hawks answered with a 13-4 run, cutting the lead to 23-22 at the 7:02 mark of the second quarter after a jumper from MEAC Rookie of the Year Bairesha Gill-Miles.
 
But the Hornets regained control, taking a 33-27 lead into the break after a Ryan Jones three.
 
Eastern Shore came out hot in the third quarter, taking a 53-46 lead with 48 seconds left in the period after a Hicks 3-pointer.
 
In the second half, Eastern Shore outscored Delaware State 50-27.
 
NaJai Pollard led Delaware State with 22 points and 10 boards.
