NCCU Men’s Tennis Alumnus Earns Scholarship to Harvard Medical

DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central men's tennis graduate Tamina (TK) Kienka has received a full scholarship to attend Harvard Medical School starting in July.

Kienka becomes the third Eagle under the direction of head coach D. Curtis Lawson to earn a scholarship to an Ivy League school in the program's Division I era. He joins Stephen Allsop (Harvard MD) and Alejandro Espitia (University of Pennsylvania Law School).

The 2015 NCCU team captain was a very successful student-athlete as an undergraduate. Kienka was a 2015 Capital One Academic All-America honoree for the Eagles who represented NCCU as an HBCU All-Star in Washington, D.C.

Kienka was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles. He played in 53 dual matches and helped NCCU win the HBCU National Championship in 2014 before successfully completing a degree in biology (pre-med) and pharmaceutical science.

The Nigerian's leadership capabilities were evident through various roles with the NCCU Honors Advisory Council, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Centennial Advisory Board. Kienka was the founder and previous co-president of GlobeMed at NCCU, a student led non-profit organization that seeks to strengthen global health equality.

Kienka maintained a 4.0 grade point average at NCCU, earning MEAC Commissioner's Honor Roll throughout his playing career. He was a Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholar, a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, The National Society of Leadership and Success, Golden Key International Honor Society and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

In addition, Lawson was recently appointed to the NCAA Div. I Tennis Committee.
