MEAC Announces Weekly Men's Tennis Honors

NORFOLK, Va., March 14, 2018Florida A&M junior Illya Skoromnyy was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Howard’s Roger Lyn was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Skoromnyy (Jr., Kyle, Ukraine) was key in Florida A&M starting conference play 2-0 this past weekend, picking up a pair of singles victories in the No. 4 position. He defeated North Carolina A&T State’s Jorge Goenaga 6-2, 4-6, 10-5, before turning in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over North Carolina Central’s Maksym Konovalov. Skoromnyy also picked up a doubles victory in the NCAT match.
 
Lyn (Fr., Kingston, Jamaica) picked up his first collegiate victory this past week, defeating Moric Budinszky of Fairleigh Dickinson 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 position. He was also strong against North Carolina Central, dropping a three-set match to the Eagles’ top player Theofanis Kontopolous 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-7 (8-10).
 
Other Top Performers
Phillip Lynch (B-CU) defeated North Carolina A&T State’s Brett Caban and North Carolina Central’s Brooks Campbell.
 
Juan Navarro (B-CU) notched singles victories over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central in the No. 5 position.
 
Cole Gittens (HOW) picked up his first win of the season, 7-5, 6-1 over North Carolina Central’s Sebastian Bromley.
 
Roger Lyn (HOW) defeated Moric Budinszky of Fairleigh Dickinson 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 position.
 
Adair Bartra (NCAT) defeated Agustin Gascia of Cardinal Stritch 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
 
Jorge Goenaga (NCAT) defeated Bethune-Cookman’s Juan Diego Ruiz 5-7, 6-3, 10-2 for his second singles win of the season.
