Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Jackson was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
North Carolina Central's Courtney Mirabella was named Pitcher of the Week while
Victoria Guzman of Bethune-Cookman earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Jackson (OF, So., Chino Hills, Calif.) led Bethune-Cookman’s offense with a .435 average (10-of-23) while driving in 10 RBIs and scoring 10 runs. She also flexed her muscles at the plate with a total of five home runs en route to a 1.217 slugging percentage. Jackson also stole four bases as she finished with a .567 on-base percentage.
Mirabella (P, Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) tossed two complete-game shutouts with 34 combined strikeouts. Her 20 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Maryland Eastern Shore was one strikeout shy of the NCAA Division I record for strikeouts in a regulation seven-inning game. She followed it up with 14 more strikeouts in a one-hit gem against Southern, a 3-0 victory.
Guzman (P, Fr., San Jose, Calif.) finished the week with a 2-0 record and 3.21 ERA while striking out a total of 13 batters. She picked up wins versus Holy Cross and Army in addition to a save versus South Dakota State. Opposing batters hit a total of .196 against Guzman as BCU finished with a 6-2 mark.
Prior to this week’s performers, the MEAC would like to also recognize
Hampton’s Dasha Hill, Mirabella from NCCU and
Nia Bowe of Coppin State for their play on the diamond the previous week. Hill earned MEAC Player of the Week honors while Mirabella and Bowe earned Pitcher and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Hill (OF, Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) finished 12-of-22 (.545) while scoring seven runs and driving in two RBIs. She created havoc for the opposing defenses with a total of eight stolen bases.
Mirabella struck out 23 batters in three games pitched while compiling an ERA of 2.84 while
Bowe (OF, Fr., Milford, Del.) batted .600 (6-of-10) with six RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Other Top Performers (March 5-11)
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton) picked up a win and save in a home doubleheader sweep over the University of Virginia. She combined for 10 strikeouts on the week.
Amy Begg (Morgan State) struck out 20 batters en route to a 2-1 record. She struck out 11 batters in an 8-1 win over Saint Peter’s.
Alexis Bermudez (Bethune-Cookman) did not allow an earned run in BCU’s eight-inning loss against San Diego State as she struck out five batters and scattered four hits with three unearned runs in the extra inning loss.
Nia Bowe (Coppin State) recorded a .375 average with seven total bases.
Kyaira Brown (Florida A&M) struck out 20 batters with a win in five appearances. Brown also combined for three hits on the offensive side of the plate.
Ava Dolan (North Carolina Central) extended her hit streak to eight games following a pair of wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and Southern.
Brooklyn Emory (Howard) hit a pair of home runs in contests versus New Mexico and St. Mary’s.
Hunter Halford (Norfolk State) recorded 12 hits and two home runs while batting .414 and drawing seven walks.
Tuli Iosefa (Norfolk State) batted .300 while driving in five RBIs with nine hits.
Desiree Moreno (Delaware State) went 7-for-15 (.467) with two home runs and four RBIs while also scoring six runs.
Breanna Robinson (Howard) batted .273 with three hits, two runs and two RBI.
Alana VanDenberg (Hampton) finished the week with a .316 average while compiling seven RBI, six hits, three runs and two stolen bases.
Lauren Williams (Florida A&M) went 8-of-22 with three doubles and five RBIs. She finished 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI versus Radford.
Damali Young (Morgan State) led Morgan State to a 3-1 mark with a .615 average while recording eight hits, six runs and two RBI. Young finished 4-for-4 in a shutout over St. Bonaventure.
