Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Jackson and Morgan State’s Damali Young were selected as selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Softball Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Florida A&M’s Veronica Burse and Bethune-Cookman’s Victoria Guzman shared Co-Pitchers of the Week Honors while Guzman was named Rookie of the Week.
Young (OF, 5-2, Jr., Westampton, N.J.) finished the first week of action with a .500 average (10-of-20) in six games. She currently leads the conference in hits, doubles (3) and triples (1) while drawing two walks. Young, who totaled 15 bases, scored four times last week with a pair of three-hit games versus Tennessee at Chattanooga and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Jackson (OF, 5-6, So., Chino Hills, Calif.) batted .313 over the weekend as she led the MEAC in runs (4), RBIs (4), triples (1) and total bases (16). The MEAC’s leader in home runs last season (14), Jackson picked up where she left off from 2017 as she hit three homers this past weekend.
Guzman (P, 5-1, Fr., San Jose, Calif) had an impressive Bethune-Cookman debut as she posted a 1.76 ERA with a 1-1 record. She tallied 13 strikeouts and a save in five appearances over the weekend. Guzman picked up her first win in relief versus Boston University on Saturday while earning a save in Sunday’s win over Northern Illinois.
Burse (P, 5-5, Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) ended the first weekend of action with a 1-1 record and eight strikeouts. Burse led the Rattlers to a win over Georgia Tech as she struck out five with only one earned run.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Morgan Crawford (Hampton) recorded six hits in four games at the Gardner-Webb Tournament, highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance in the final game.
Hera Varmah (Florida A&M) batted .333 with two hits, two runs, two RBI and a home run in two games.
Mackenzie Woodard (Florida A&M) averaged .800 going 4-for-5 during a two-game span, highlighted by a perfect 3-for-3 outing in the win against Georgia Tech.
