NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 27, 2018—Bethune-Cookman senior Angel Golden was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Bethune-Cookman’s Kiana Williams earned Rookie of the Week honors, while
Norfolk State redshirt junior La’Deja James was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Golden (G, 5-8, Sr., Tampa, Fla.) averaged 26.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest this past week, going a combined 18-for-49 (.367) from the floor and 9-for-30 (.300) from 3-point range. She scored 20 points to go along with eight rebounds against FIU, before pouring in a career-high 32 points on seven 3-pointers against Georgia Southern. She also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals in that game.
Williams (G, 5-6, Fr., Columbia, Md.) averaged 9.0 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds in two games for the Wildcats this past week – including a 14-point, eight-assist contest in a win over FIU, a game in which she also had five rebounds and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Against Georgia Southern, she had five assists to just one turnover and grabbed four rebounds.
James (G, 5-8, r-Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) was an all-around defensive presence for the Spartans, averaging nearly six rebounds, just over four steals and nearly a block a contest this past week. She had three steals each in games against Campbell and Lehigh – on top of eight rebounds in the Lehigh contest – and she had four rebounds and seven steals in a win over Liberty.
Other Top Performers
Chasimmie Brown (B-CU) had two steals each against FIU and Georgia Southern, and also had two blocks against Georgia Southern.
NaJai Pollard (DSU) had 31 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks against in-state rival Delaware.
Mya Moye (FAMU) scored 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and dished out three assists against Omaha.
Candice Williams (FAMU) posted two double-digit scoring efforts, pouring in 12 points against Omaha and 11 against FIU.
Jayla Thornton (HOW) had 16 points and four rebounds, hitting four 3-pointers, in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson.
Adre’onia Coleman (MSU) averaged 13.3 points in three games this past week, including a 20-point effort against Maryland.
Alexus Lessears (NCAT) scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds against Maine – after grabbing seven boards and blocking two shots against Virginia.
Paulina Afriyie (NCCU) went 10-for-13 from the floor and scored 21 points, to go along with seven rebounds, against USC Upstate.
