WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 16, 2018—Bethune-Cookman outlasted a feisty Coppin State team Friday evening in Burr Gymnasium, taking a 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9) win in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championships.
The Wildcats (16-15) will face Howard in the semifinal round on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Jordan Jefferson, a First Team All-MEAC honoree, led Bethune-Cookman with 18 kills and 13 digs for her MEAC-best 20th double-double of the season. Sterling Williamson and Tynesha Adams had 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
J’Nai Higgins had 38 of the Wildcats’ 44 assists.
With the match tied at a set apiece, Coppin State appeared to take control in the third set – despite Bethune-Cookman jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Eagles clawed back into the match, going on a 13-8 spurt to take a 14-13 lead after an Asia Stennis kill.
B-CU led 20-19 later in the set, but the Eagles finished strong, taking a 21-20 lead on a Miajavon Coleman kill. Coppin State would not trail for the rest of that set, taking the frame to go up 2-1 in the match.
After the Wildcats took the fourth set to force the match to its distance – three of Friday’s four quarterfinal matches went five sets – they carried that momentum into the fifth set, going up 6-2 after a Williamson kill.
Coleman cut the lead to 8-5 with a kill, but that was as close as the Eagles got.
Coleman, the MEAC Rookie of the Year, led Coppin State (12-20) with 19 kills, hitting .293 for the match. Stennis added 16 kills.
