MEAC Cross Country Homestretch Underway

The 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) cross country season enters its final month this coming weekend, with a handful of meets scattered between Friday and Saturday.

North Carolina A&T State highlighted the action this past weekend, as women's squad won the 35th annual Greensboro Invitational and the men came in third. The Aggies also swept both individual titles; freshman Regan Kimtai won gold in the men's 8K race, while junior G'Jasmyn Butler won the women's 5K race.

Butler's 19:10.10 was a program record and a personal best, and her time currently ranks as the seventh-fastest in the MEAC at 5,000 meters.

Kimtai's 25:56.70 is the seventh-best men's time at 8,000 meters.

Norfolk State's Martha Bissah has run twice this season, and after Saturday's George Mason Invitational, she has two gold medals. This past weekend saw her run a 21:41.70 on the 6K course in Leesburg, Va.

Kimtai was named the MEAC Men's Runner of the Week, while Butler and Bussah shared Women's Runner of the Week honors.

Mercy Chemutai of Maryland Eastern Shore was also a winner this past weekend, taking individual gold in the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University. She completed the 6K course in 21:58.56 in a meet that also included Delaware State.

Florida A&M remains ranked No. 6 in the South Region on the men's side this week, as determined by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), despite being idle this past week.

Delaware State will host another meet in Smyrna, Del. this Friday, the Pre-Conference Run in which Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore will also take part. Savannah State is tentatively slated to run in theWinthrop adidas Invite, which was rescheduled due to Hurricane Florence.

The Tigers are then slated to compete in the Charleston Classic.

Saturday will see North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central in Cary, N.C. for the HBCU Challenge, while South Carolina State will run in the Bulldog Invite.
