MEAC Volleyball: Down the Stretch They Come

With just two weeks left in the 2018 regular season, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball is heating up as teams jockey for seeding or even a chance to qualify for the 2018 championship tournament.

Howard leads the Northern Division at 7-0 after posting victories over Morgan State and Coppin State this past weekend. The three-time defending MEAC Tournament champion is poised to potentially wrap up the division's top seed with a pair of victories this weekend, while Maryland Eastern Shore currently holds the No. 2 slot in the North after defeating Delaware State this past weekend.

Coming into this weekend's action, Morgan State and Coppin State hold the last two tournament slots in the Northern Division. Those two teams will face off on Sunday in the Lady Bear's Hill Field House.

Coppin State is looking for its first MEAC tournament berth since 2015.

Norfolk State, which defeated Morgan State this past weekend, is still alive in the tournament race, and the Spartans play host to both Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State this weekend.

Florida A&M has rocketed to the top of the Southern Division standings after going 4-0 this past week, all against conference foes. The Lady Rattlers swept make-up matches against South Carolina State and Savannah State early in the week, before taking weekend tilts against North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central.

FAMU, which sits at 6-1 in MEAC play, will be in action just once this weekend: hosting rival Bethune-Cookman on Friday. B-CU currently sits second in the Southern Division standings at 5-2 -- and the Lady Wildcats won the first meeting with FAMU, 3-1 in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Oct. 5.

If B-CU beats FAMU again this weekend, the Lady Wildcats would hold any potential head-to-head tiebreaker.

Despite leading the division earlier in the season, North Carolina A&T State sits third in the South heading into this weekend's action. The Aggies, 4-3 in league play, will face South Carolina State and Savannah State at home this coming weekend -- as will North Carolina Central, which currently sits fifth in the South but is aiming for its third straight tournament bid.

After this past week's action, Florida A&M's Maria Yvette Garcia was named MEAC Player of the Week after averaging nearly four and a half kills and over five points a set. Zoe McBride of Morgan State earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman's Meraiah Hill, who tallied 15 blocks in two matches, was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.

Coppin State's Brianna Lang earned Setter of the Week honors.

The 2018 regular season wraps up on Sunday, Nov. 11 with four matches.

The 2018 MEAC Volleyball Championships will be held Nov. 16-18 in Howard's Burr Gymnasium. The top four teams from each division will make up this year's field.
