MEAC Volleyball Taking a Relative Breather This Week

With the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball slate mostly half over, this coming week will be a relative breather of sorts. There are only seven matches on the docket for the week, and five of the conference's seven schools do not play at all.

Halfway through the conference slate, Howard sits atop the Northern Division at 5-0 after defeating Norfolk State this past weekend. Morgan State, which defeated Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore this past weekend, is 4-1 in league play, while the Hawks -- the division's preseason favorite -- sit in third at 3-2.

Coppin State (2-3), Norfolk State (1-4) and Delaware State (0-5) round out the Northern Division.

North Carolina A&T State sits atop the Southern Division at 4-1 after defeating rival North Carolina Central this past weekend -- combined with Florida A&M having both of its conference matches postponed due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Michael. FAMU is second in the division by winning percentage, followed by preseason favorite Bethune-Cookman at 3-2 and North Carolina Central at 2-3.

Savannah State and South Carolina State, which both lost matches due to the FAMU postponements, round out the Southern Division at 1-3. South Carolina State won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season.

Bethune-Cookman sophomore Jordan Jefferson and Morgan State sophomore Kalysia Bates were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week. Coppin State’s Miajavon Coleman was named Rookie of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman junior Shayla Eugene earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Coppin State freshman Brianna Lang was named Setter of the Week.

Bethune-Cookman will be the busiest MEAC team this week, hitting the road to face Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday before turning north for non-conference matches against Coppin State (Friday) and Howard (Sunday). Bethune-Cookman head coach Brittany Williams is a Howard graduate (2004).

Delaware State and South Carolina State will be home on Tuesday, taking on La Salle and Georgia Southern, respectively. North Carolina Central (vs. Elon) and Morgan State (vs. American) will be home on Wednesday.

Florida A&M, Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T State and Savannah State are idle this week.
