Men's Cross Country

Crunch Time Fast Approaching for MEAC Cross Country

With just two weeks left until the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships, many of the league's 12 cross country institutions will be running in their final regular-season tune-ups this coming weekend.

In fact, all 12 schools are in action this weekend for the first time this season.

Florida A&M continues to have a stellar 2018 campaign, as the men picked up their third team title of the season this past weekend in winning the Disney Cross Country Classic. The Rattlers had all five runners place in the top eight, paced by sophomore Jacob Nkamasiai, who took individual gold with a time of 25:07.90.

The FAMU women came in third, and Shalet Mitei came in second overall after completing the 5K course in 18:01.20.

The Florida A&M men are currently ranked No. 6 in the South Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). View the complete regional rankings here.

Elsewhere, the North Carolina A&T State women won the HBCU Challenge for the fifth year in a row, and junior G'Jasmyne Butler took gold for the second straight week after running an 18:52.20.

In Smyrna, Del., Maryland Eastern Shore swept the men's and women's team titles at the Delaware State Pre-Conference Run at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center. Mercy Chemutai won gold in the women's 5K race, turning in the fifth-fastest time in the MEAC this season with an 18:49.40.

Nkamasiai and Mitei were named the MEAC Men's and Women's Runners of the Week.

The bulk of this weekend's action will take place on Friday, highlighted by Delaware State hosting yet another meet -- the Delaware State Alumni Run (in which Coppin State, Martyland Eastern Shore and Morgan State will also compete). Norfolk State and North Carolina Central will run in the East Carolina Invitational, while Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T State will each be at separate meets.

On Saturday, Howard will compete in the Gettysburg Invitational, while Savannah State and South Carolina State will also be in action.

The 2018 MEAC Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center in Smyrna, Del. The women's 5K race will begin at 9:45 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 10:30 a.m.
