NORFOLK, Va. - Morgan State's
Tiwian Kendley has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Howard's R.J. Cole was named Rookie of the Week while
Morgan State’s Phillip Carr and
Bethune-Cookman’s Soufiyane Diakite was selected as Co-Defensive Players of the Week.
Kendley continued his torrid pace as he averaged 32 points, six rebounds, three assists and 1.7 steals as Morgan State went 3-0 to open MEAC play. Kendley saved his best for last in two of Morgan State’s three games as he scored 11 of his 28 points in the final 1:33 to help MSU rally back from 18 points in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Versus Savannah State on Monday night, Kendley once again was called on late as he scored the game-winning shot with 6.4 seconds remaining to help Morgan State defeat Savannah State and extend the Bears’ winning streak to three as he also scored 33 points. The 6-5 senior from Harlem, NY also shot 48.4 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line.
Cole did everything he could to will Howard to victory as he averaged 31 points, 7.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in two games played last week. In Howard’s MEAC opener versus Florida A&M, Cole scored 30 points and dished out seven assists with a steal while scoring 32 points with eight assists in an overtime loss to Bethune-Cookman.
Carr was the second-leading rebounder in the MEAC after the first week of action with 10.7 boards per game. He totaled 21 defensive rebounds and 11 offensive boards with highs of 13 boards versus Savannah State and 11 against Maryland Eastern Shore. Carr also had two blocks and a steal in Morgan State’s win over Florida A&M.
Diakite led the MEAC in rebounding as he grabbed a total of 34 boards in three games over the past week. The 6-6 forward from Bronx, NY averaged 11.3 rebounds in Bethune-Cookman’s three wins with a high of 13 versus Howard on Saturday. Diakite had double-double digit rebounding performances in all three games while also tallying two blocks and a steal.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Raasean Davis (North Carolina Central) led the Eagles in scoring with 16.5 points in two games, highlighted by a career-high output of 23 points against Norfolk State.
Chad Andrews-Fulton (Coppin State) scored a career-high 19 points with nine rebounds along with the game-winning layup in the final 12 seconds against Florida A&M.
Reggie Gardner Jr. (North Carolina Central) averaged 11 points per game and knocked down six three pointers, including four against Delaware State.
Derrik Jamerson, Jr. (Norfolk State) averaged 12 points on the week which was highlighted by a 15-point, five-rebound performance against North Carolina Central.
Lamar Monroe (Coppin State) led all scorers in games versus Norfolk State and Savannah State as he averaged 20.7 pts and five rebounds.
Ralueke Orizu (Savannah State) averaged 12 points and five rebounds in two games which was highlighted by a 19-point, three-block performance off the bench at Morgan State.
Mastadi Pitt (Norfolk State) averaged 11.5 points and in two games versus Coppin State and North Carolina Central.
Malique Trent-Street (Hampton) recorded a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 assists versus Maryland Eastern Shore.
Kyle Williams (Norfolk State) averaged 10 points, eight rebounds and 1.5 blocks in games against Coppin State and North Carolina Central.
