Howard's Cole Receives CBS Freshman of the Week Recognition

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 25, 2018 -- The accolades continue to pour in for Howard freshman RJ Cole. On Tuesday, CBS Sports announced Cole as its college basketball Freshman of the Week.

Due to his 26.0 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in wins over North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central, Cole beat out Oklahoma freshman sensation Trae Young for the highly coveted honor. This is the first time in the five-year history of CBS Sports' Freshman of the Week that a MEAC player has received the honor with CBSSports.com/the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Additionally, Cole appeared in the CBS Frosh Watch, which highlights impressive freshman in men's Division I basketball.

"The Frosh Watch is a top 10 statistical tracker of the best freshmen in college hoops. It has no bias toward team winning, as freshmen often can be good even on rebuilding or sub-.500 teams. Cole is a shining example. He's been a volume player but has shouldered a bigger load than any freshman not named Trae Young this season," saidd CBS Sports' columnist Matt Norlander. "After Oklahoma's losses last week, in good portion to Young, Cole had the strongest statistical week of any freshman in America. When you include the fact that Howard won both its games in overtime, it sealed the selection. With the numbers he's putting up, I don't see him falling off the Frosh Watch the rest of the season if he keeps pouring it in.".

Cole is off to a stellar start in his first year, winning MEAC Freshman of the Year honors a remarkable nine times already this season. He is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation in points per game and leads the Bison men's basketball team in assists. To read the entire CBS announcement, click here.
