MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors

Coppin State sophomore Megan Narvaez and Savannah State senior Alexis Singleton were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Co-Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Savannah State's Amanda McDowell earned Pitcher of the Week honors, while Jasmine Melgoza, of Delaware State, was named Rookie of the Week.

Narvaez (INF, 5-4, So., Downey, Calif.) recorded a .500 batting average and .625 on base percentage in six games last week. She finished with nine hits, including four doubles and one home run, while scoring seven runs. Narvaez tied a career-high three RBIs, on one hit, in an 8-1 victory over Norfolk State. Defensively, she notched 10 putouts and six assists for the week.

Singleton (RF, 5-9, Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) led the team with a .647 batting average in five games last week. She was 9-for-11 in a three-game sweep of South Carolina State, with six runs scored, one double, two triples and four RBIs. Singleton was also 3-for-3 in stolen bases during that series. Defensively, she picked up eight putouts with a perfect fielding percentage.

McDowell (P, 6-0, Sr., Cheney, Wash.) recorded a 2.00 ERA in three games last week. She went 2-0 against South Carolina State with a 1.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. McDowell also pitched the team's first shutout of the season in game one against SCSU, scattering two hits.

Melgoza (2B, 5-2, Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) went 8-for-15 behind the plate in four games last week. She recorded a .600 batting average with two RBIs, while driving in four runs, in a double-header against Delaware. Melgoza also hit a lead-off single and gave the Hornets their first run against Lafayette.

Other Top Performers

Madison Didion (CSU) pitched four complete games to finish with an ERA of 3.38 and 29 strikeouts.

Alexis Day (FAMU) batted .615 with eight hits, six RBI and three runs scored as FAMU won the Southern Division title.

Kenya Pereira (FAMU) went 2-0 with a combined 10 strikeouts versus Bethune-Cookman.

Samantha Casarez (MDES) went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in one run, in a win over Howard.

Megan Barfield (NSU) belted a two-run home run in the win over Coppin State.

Jaylene Pryor (NSU) hit a solo home run to give the Spartans a 4-3 led over Hampton.
