WEEK 11 SOFTBALL RELEASE
• MEAC softball enters week 11 highlighted by seven non-conference contests and five league contests.
• With only eight postseason slots available, it will be a fierce battle for the final four spots as four teams in the MEAC North are separated by only three games heading into the home stretch of the conference schedule. Only four teams per division earn MEAC Tournament berths.
• Florida A&M suffered a surprising loss to previous winless Savannah State last weekend and made its road to a MEAC North Championship a little tougher as they’re only one game ahead of Bethune-Cookman. Both FAMU and BCU are off this weekend as they prepare for next week’s winner-take-all showdown for the MEAC South Title in Daytona Beach, Fla.
• Morgan State and Hampton appear to be headed towards a collision course that’ll decide the MEAC North Title. However, the match-up will have to wait several weeks as they won’t play until May 5-6 due to weather cancellations earlier in the season.
• Morgan State and Bethune-Cookman are carrying the MEAC banner in terms of non-conference play as the Bears and Wildcats have a league-best 11 and 10 wins, respectively.
• Morgan State’s Damali Young is a perfect 34-of-34 in stolen bases and holds the MSU single season record. Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Jackson leads the MEAC with a .431 average, 13 home runs, 43 RBI and 102 total bases. She ranks second with 53 hits.
• Morgan State’s Amy Begg, Maryland Eastern Shore’s Adrienne Guerra and Florida A&M’s Kenya Pereira lead the MEAC with 135, 117, and 116 strikeouts, respectively.
• Delaware State head coach Amber Jackson was inducted into the 2017 MEAC Hall of Fame Class on March 9. Jackson was a former softball standout at Bethune-Cookman.
• The Delaware State Hornets and the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers were predicted to win the MEAC softball northern and southern divisions, respectively.
• The FAMU Softball team handed Coach Veronica Wiggins a milestone 700th win Saturday, March 13 with an 8-1 win over Howard University in the final game of the Puerto Rico College Softball Classic. Wiggins achieved her 250th MEAC win on Sunday, April 2 and is 250-87 (.741) all-time in MEAC play.
