MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 5, 2017Morgan State senior Lexus Spears was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Brianna Battle earned Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina A&T State sophomore Alexus Lessears was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Spears (F/C, 6-2, Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) averaged 19.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game in helping Morgan State to a 3-0 record this past week. She shot 52.0 percent (26-for-50) from the floor in those three games, opening the week with a 22-point, eight-rebound, three-block performance against Central Connecticut. She also had 20 points and nine boards against NJIT, before scoring 17 points against FIU, while also grabbing eight rebounds, blocking two shots and grabbing three steals.

Battle (G, 5-3, Fr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) averaged 10.0 points and 4.0 assists for the Wildcats this past week – and in a win over Grand Canyon, she dropped 14 points to go along with eight assists. In that contest, she hit four 3-pointers, while also recording a block and a steal. Earlier in the week, she had six points and three rebounds in an overtime loss against North Florida.

Lessears (C, 6-3, So., Cleveland, Ohio) grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked five shots at UT Martin earlier this week, both career highs, to go along with a steal. Eight of those rebounds came on the defensive end, and Lessears also had a career-high 20 points in that contest.

Other Top Performers
Briana Hardee (B-CU) dropped 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting in a win over Grand Canyon.

Ashanti Hunt (B-CU) averaged 9.0 rebounds in two games this past week.

Genesis Lucas (CSU) had 22 points and six assists, going 7-for-13 from the floor, at Old Dominion.

Maraiyah Smith (CSU) had 12 points at Old Dominion.

NaJai Pollard (DSU) scored 20 points and had four blocks in a win over Longwood, before turning in a 19-point, 11-rebound performance against Drexel.

Shalaunda Burney-Robinson (FAMU) recorded 12 points and 14 rebounds as Florida A&M defeated Western Carolina for its first win of the season.

Allina Starr (HAM) had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists at nationally-ranked Oregon.

K’lynn Willis (HAM) recorded a career-high six steals at Oregon.

Sarah Edmond (HOW) dropped 24 points in a win over FIU after a 19-point, five-assist performance against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Tariah Johnson (HOW) had 14 points, six steals and five rebounds against FIU.

Khadedra Croker (NSU) set career highs in rebounds (nine) and blocks (five) against East Carolina.
