Aggies Out To Make History In Celebration Bowl Saturday Afternoon

ATLANTA - North Carolina A&T State will attempt to make MEAC history Saturday afternoon as they'll face Grambling State in the third edition of the Celebration Bowl at the brand-new Mercedes Benz Stadium at 12 p.m.

The Celebration Bowl, which pitches the champions from the MEAC and SWAC, will be carried live on ABC and ESPN3.com live for the third straight season as a pair of MEAC alums in Jay Walker (Howard/color commentary) and Tiffany Greene (sideline/Florida A&M) will join play-by-play announcer Mark Neely in the booth. The bowl will be played in the billion-dollar Mercedes Benz Stadium as this marks the first-ever collegiate bowl contest in the stadium. The previous Celebration Bowls were played at the Georgia Dome, which has been demolished.

At stake for the Aggies is an undefeated mark and the opportunity to become the first team in MEAC history to finish the regular season and postseason with an undefeated record.  A win would break the school record for wins in a season with 12 as the previous record was held by the 1999 team that won 11 games. In 39 years of Division I-AA/FCS football, N.C. A&T also attempts to become the first HBCU to finish undefeated and untied on the FCS level.

Led by head coach Rod Broadway, the Aggies are in good hands on the sideline as he’s no stranger to big games with a National Championship ring from the University of Florida as an assistant coach and championship rings from North Carolina Central and Grambling State as head coach. He has a plethora of talent to rely on in quarterback Lamar Raynard, an All-American offensive tackle in Brandon Parker, a 1,000-yard rusher in Marquell Cartwright and a defense led by Jeremy Taylor and freshman standout Mac McCain III.

Grambling State will be one of the toughest opponents on A&T's schedule this season as the Tigers are back-to-back SWAC Champions and the reigning Celebration Bowl Champions. The Tigers are on a 11-game winning streak and currently lead the all-time series by a 4-3 margin as this marks the first meeting between both teams since 1996. Another storyline in the contest besides Broadway's match-up against his former employer is that former Aggie head coach Lee Fobbs serves as an assistant on Grambling State's staff, which is led by his son, Broderick Fobbs.

Devante Kinkaid paces GSU's offensive attack at quarterback as he has thrown for 2,632 yards and 21 touchdowns while linebacker De’Arius Christmas leads the defense after compiling 76 tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss.

The all-time Celebration Bowl series is tied at 1-1 as the Aggies defeated Alcorn State in 2015 while Grambling State held off North Carolina Central in 2016.
