SSU Releases 2016-17 Women's Basketball Schedule

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women’s basketball team announces the 2016-17 schedule Wednesday, which consist of seven teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, as well as hosting the University of South Carolina in Tiger Arena just before Christmas. 

The seven teams that made the tournament last season, include: Seton Hall University, Alabama State University, Jacksonville University, Auburn University, University of Washington (Final Four), South Carolina (Sweet Sixteen), and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Champion North Carolina A&T State University. 

SSU starts off the season with an exhibition game against crosstown rival Armstrong State in the “Battle by the Marsh” on Monday, Nov. 7 in Tiger Arena and opens the regular season traveling to South Orange, N.J., to face Seton Hall on Friday, Nov. 11.

The Lady Tigers return home for their home opener against Columbia College on Sunday, Nov. 13 and host Alabama State Tuesday, Nov. 15.

SSU travels to Iowa State University on Tuesday, Nov. 22 before Thanksgiving and then travels to Kennesaw State University after Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 26.  The Lady Tigers host the next three games in Tiger Arena with Jacksonville on Nov. 29, Georgia Southern University on Dec. 1 and Jacksonville State University on Dec. 3.

The next five games are teams that played in a postseason tournament last season with three in the NCAA Tournament and two in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). 

SSU faces Auburn on Sunday, Dec. 11 in Auburn, Ala.  The Lady Tigers take a week off before traveling to the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday, Dec. 18.

Savannah State hosts its final game of the 2016 year with South Carolina coming to Tiger Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 21.  USC finished last year with a 31-1 record and ranked No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the AP Poll in the final poll. 

The Lady Tigers take off 11 days in between games during Christmas and travels to Ft. Myers, Fla., to face Florida Gulf Coast University on Monday, Jan. 2 and starts MEAC play against Bethune-Cookman University in Tiger Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 4.  FGCU and B-CU both played in the NIT last season.

Savannah State travels to Virginia to play Norfolk State University on Saturday, Jan. 7 and Hampton University on Monday, Jan. 9 before returning home for Florida A&M University on Saturday, Jan. 14. 

SSU travels to South Carolina State University on Monday, Jan. 16 and returns home for a two-game homestand with Morgan State University on Saturday, Jan. 21 and Delaware State on Monday, Jan. 23.

The Lady Tigers take a trip up North in the Nation’s Capital with Howard University on Saturday, Jan. 28 and University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, Jan. 30 and returns home for a three-game homestand.  SSU starts with Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 4, Norfolk State on Monday, Feb. 6 and finishes with NAIA opponent Allen University on Monday, Feb. 13.

Savannah State travels to Morgan State on Feb. 18 in Baltimore, Md., and quickly returns home to play against Coppin State on Feb. 20.  The final road trip of the regular season has the Lady Tigers traveling to North Carolina to face North Carolina A&T State on Saturday, Feb. 25 and North Carolina Central University on Monday, Feb. 27.

The Lady Tigers host their final home game on March 2 against South Carolina State University for Senior Day.

Savannah State starts postseason play with a trip to Norfolk, Va., for the MEAC Championship starting on Monday, March 6 and finishing on Saturday, March 11 with the championship game.
