TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The South Carolina State women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-9) to Florida A&M in the Mid-Eastern Athletic opener for both teams on Friday morning at Tully Gym on the campus of Florida State.
As a team, SC State (0-15, 0-1 MEAC) tallied 15 digs, 14 kills, 13 assists and three total blocks for the match. Briana Dafney had a team-high five kills.
Maria Garcia led FAMU (4-11, 1-0 MEAC) with nine kills, while Valeria Lopez had 30 assists.
Winthrop 3, North Carolina Central 0
DURHAM, N.C. – Seniors Kelsey Murphy and Casey Curran netted over half of North Carolina Central University’s points in a 3-0 non-conference loss to visiting Winthrop University in volleyball action Friday evening inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Winthrop (8-8) leveled its record with the 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 victory. NCCU (1-7) suffered its third consecutive setback.
Murphy and Curran both blasted nine kills. Murphy added an ace for a team-high 10 points.
The sophomore tandem of Jazmine Daye and White White continued their steady play as both middle blockers tallied five kills.
Junior setter Paige Phillips provided 27 assists and sophomore libero Bree Simmons scooped up a match-high 12 digs and served up a pair of aces.
Bethune-Cookman 3, Savannah State 0
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Senior setter Caitlynn Masoe recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 assists and 12 digs as the Savannah State University volleyball team (0-17, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) dropped its conference opener on the road to Bethune-Cookman University (2-12, 1-0 MEAC) in Warner Christian Gym Friday night.
The Long Beach, Calif., native need three kills to record a triple-double, but finished with seven kills and two service aces, while senior libero Alexis Washington led the team with 13 digs and junior setter Alee Quint led the team with 18 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Dominique Ingram added six kills, while senior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel recorded four kills and 10 digs.
The Wildcats were led by Phylecia Armstrong and Alondra Bautista with 11 kills, Phalen Clark with 23 assists and Normarie Rolo Soto with 11 digs.
Howard 3, Maryland Eastern Shore 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener, Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball were defeated by the defending MEAC champion Howard in three sets (17-25, 16-25, 17-25) at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. on Friday.
The Hawks fell to 7-9 (0-1 MEAC) while the Bison improved to 11-5 (1-0 MEAC).
Sophomore Lucia Babic paced the Hawks with eight kills and nine digs, coming just short of a double-double. Senior Mere Serea participated in three blocks—one of them solo—and freshman Ivana Blazevic contributed 16 assists while adding three block assists. Sophomore libero Koya Sowells added seven digs.
The Bison were led by 13 kills from Khalia Donaldson, 31 assists from Tamia Dockery and 15 digs from Katherine Broussard.
Norfolk State 3, Coppin State 2
BALTIMORE, MD – In the 2016 MEAC home opener, Coppin State fell 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, 4-15) to Norfolk State University on Friday inside the PEC Auxiliary Gym.
Asia Stennis finished with a season-best .275 attack percentage posting 15 kills against the Spartans. She also tied a season-high two assists in the match.
Bailee Jackson had 13 kills hitting the double figure kill mark for the fourth time this season. Jackson added seven digs and a service ace. Guro Froberg collected a season-high 18 digs and was third on the offense with nine kills.
Freshman setter Dominique Madarang tied a season-best with two assisted blocks and paced the Eagles with 36 assists and four kills.
Morgan State 3, Hampton 1
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Friday night dropping a tightly-contested four-set match at Morgan State 25-13, 23-25, 25-27, 20-25.
Reeana Richardson recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs to go along with three blocks and two aces. Lena Washington just missed out on a double-double with 11 kills and eight digs. Freshman Micah Leavell added 10 kills and four digs for Hampton with Brianna Lilly recording 40 assists and seven digs.
Hampton jumped out in the opening set racing out to a 10-3 lead on a Richardson service ace en route to the first set win at 25-13.
