UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Howard volleyball team put on a commanding show with a 3-1 victory over Clemson on Friday night to open the Penn State Invitational at Rec Hall.
The Bison bumped its overall record to 10-3 with the victory. It is the program’s best start under head coach Shaun Kupferberg since he took over in 2012.
Junior Khaila Donaldson was one kill shy of tying her career-best with 22 kills. She also tallied 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Donaldson now has 996 career kills and would be just the fourth Bison in program history to reach 1,000.
Classmate Jessica Young added a career-high 17 kills in the outing. Sophomore Tamia Dockery also had a career night with 54 assists. Senior Morgan Marlbrough earned a match-high 22 digs, while senior Katherine Broussard and junior Carlise Cardoza notched 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Seeking a reversal of fortune from last weekend, the Hawks took on Notre Dame in the opening match of the Spartan Classic at Michigan State. But the luck of the Irish was with Notre Dame, who defeated Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets (12-25, 20-25, 13-25) Friday afternoon.
Freshman Iva Vujosevic narrowly missed a double-double with eight kills and eight digs. The outside hitter also led the Hawks in aces with a pair while converting 19 percent of her attacks.
On defense, sophomore Koya Sowells recorded  a match high 15 digs and senior Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) helped on four of the Hawks’ five blocks. Junior Kirstin Fink assisted half of the team’s kills with 12.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (0-13) dropped both matches Friday at the Bulldog Invitational to Elon University (11-2) 3-0 (9-25, 19-25, 8-25) and to Charleston Southern (5-9) 3-0 (12-25, 28-26, 16-25, 23-25) in McAlister Field House.
Senior setter Caitlynn Masoe recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs against Charleston Southern.  The Long Beach, Calif., native led the Lady Tigers with 16 kills and added 11 assists and 14 digs in two matches, while sophomore outside hitter Charlinda Colbert added 13 kills and three blocks.
Senior Alexis Washington led the team with 36 digs, while junior setter Alee Quint led the team with 28 assists and added 11 digs in two matches. 

 

 

 

Hampton 3, Loyola (Md.) 2
FAIRFAX, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team made their first win of the 2016 season a memorable one on Friday in Fairfax at the Patriot Invitational.   The Lady Pirates rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Loyola (MD) 25-22, 25-27, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11 in the opening match of the tournament.
The win was the first of the season for Hampton and for first-year head coach Brandon Duvall.  Hampton had lost their first eight matches of the season all by straight sets.
Reeana Richardson recorded season highs in kills (25) and blocks (3) and tied her season high in aces (2) to lead Hampton.  Brianna Lilly had a season high in assists (42) and Micah Leavell set her season high in kills (15) and aces (2).  Ashlyn Dunlop topped the team with her season high in assists (3), while Lena Washington added a season-best 11 digs.
