SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel missed on a double-double as she recorded eight kills and eight digs along with two service aces and a block as Savannah State University volleyball team (0-12) fell to Charleston Southern (4-8) 3-1 (10-25, 25-14, 14-25, 15-25) Tuesday night in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
Senior setter Caitlynn Masoe added two kills with nine assists, seven digs, a service ace and two blocks, while graduate student Justice Dilworth added six kills and five digs and freshman middle blocker Dominique Ingram added seven kills with a .286 hitting percentage and three blocks.
Junior setter Alee Quint led the team with 18 assists and added six digs, while senior libero Alexis Washington led the team with 16 kills.
Georgia 3, Florida A&M 1
ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattler volleyball team pushed SEC power Georgia to a quite uncomfortable position. The visiting Rattlers made for a difficult non-conference opponent, taking the Bulldogs to four sets before being defeated 3-1 at the Ramsey Center on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Freshman Nicole Abreu, led all scorers with 18 kills. Abreu was very efficient against the lengthy front line of UGA, as she scored at a .312 clip. Maria Garcia carded 13 kills on the evening. The two constitute the Lady Rattlers’ dynamic freshman duo, with Abreu starring at just 17 years old.
Senior middle blocker, Gina Lopez-Chavez, rounded out the trio of Lady Rattlers in double-figure kills with 10, at a highly efficient .389 percentage. Freshman Radka Dimitrova had 16 digs, and sophomore Valentina Carrasco added 14 digs, while junior Valeria Lopez dished out 33 assists.
Howard 3, Loyola (Md.) 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University volleyball team picked up its fourth three-set victory (25-9, 25-19, 25-13) of the season after defeating Loyola (Md.) in Burr Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Bison improved to 9-3 overall, their best start since the 2013 season, and extended its win-streak to five games. The Greyhounds fell to 3-5 overall.
Howard hit a season-best .478, making only five miscues on 67 attempts. The Bison held the Greyhounds to a .075 hitting percentage.
Junior Khaila Donaldson was the only player on either team to reach double figures in kills with a match-high 18. She also had a .615 hitting percentage with just two errors on 26 swings.
Elon 3, North Carolina Central 0
DURHAM, N.C. – Junior setter Paige Phillips provided 17 assists and 15 digs for host North Carolina Central University, but the visiting Elon University volleyball team hit a season-high .344 to complete a straight-set victory in McDougald-McLendon Arena Tuesday evening.
The Phoenix progressively got better each set in winning 25-22, 25-14 and 25-9. Elon (10-2) won its seventh consecutive match. NCCU (1-6) was denied a win in its home opener for the seventh straight season with the Lady Eagles last home-opening victory coming against High Point University in 2009.
