MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team didn’t have to wait long to see their hard work in preseason practices pay off. That’s because the Hawks started off the year with a convincing 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) over Alabama A&M in the opening game of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup on Friday.
Alana Polk was perfect in attacks in the opener, converting eight kills on eight attempts. Also she participated in the Hawks’ one block in the match, along with fellow junior Kirstin Fink. Sophomore Lucia Babic led the Hawks in kills with 11 while classmate Rachel Kayongo led in digs with seven. As a team the Hawks converted over 32-percent of their attacks and finished of the Bulldogs in every category except blocks.

MIAMI, Fla. – The Florida A&M University women’s volleyball team opened their 2016 season Friday morning with a hard-fought 3-0 (13-25, 21-25, 20-25) setback at the hands of Coastal Carolina University in the opening match of the FIU Volleyball Invitational.
After dropping the opening set, 25-13, FAMU tightened things up competitively, dropping the second set, 25-21, before losing the third, 25-20. Freshman Maria Yvette Garcia led FAMU with nine kills, followed by freshman Radka Dimitrova with seven, senior Ginna Lopez-Chavez with six.

ATHENS, Ga. – The Savannah State University volleyball team started the 2016 campaign under first year head coach Edric Poitier with a 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 16-25) loss to the University of San Francisco Friday afternoon to start the Benson Invitational.
Graduate student outside hitter Justice Dilworth, senior setter Caitlynn Masoe and freshman outside hitter Dominic Ingraham led the team with five kills each, while Masoe added four digs and five assists. Senior libero led the team with nine digs, while junior setter Alee Quint led the team with 13 assists and added four digs.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- Delaware State opened the 2016 volleyball season with a competitive showing in a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart of the Northeast Conference at the University of Maryland Tournament.
Sydney Armbrister, Jenessa Helu and newcomer Sabina Szmajduch tied for team-high honors with six kills each for DSU. Alliyah McBean topped the Hornets with 10 digs, while newcomer Gabriella Enriquez had a team-high 12 assists.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team produced overall better numbers in its second match on the first day of the season, but did suffer another straight-set loss on Friday in a 3-0 setback to College of the Holy Cross in the James Madison University Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Crusaders (1-1) had to rally from sizable deficits in the first two sets and then had to hold off the Lady Eagles (0-2) in the third set to win by a score of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20.
