BALTIMORE, Md. – The 2016-17 Coppin State men’s basketball team will participate in the third annual MGM Grand Main Event tournament to be played November 21-23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Eagles will compete out of the Middleweight Bracket featuring Ball State, Coastal Carolina, and Southern Utah.
“The tournament will be pretty good,” said CSU head coach Michael Grant. “We are going to play one game in Las Vegas and three on the road at different home sites, but we are really looking forward to this opportunity. A lot of our players have never been to Vegas before so it should be a lot of fun for our team and coaching staff.”
Coppin State takes on Ball State on Monday, November 21st at 12:30 p.m. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Ball State improved from a 7-23 record two seasons ago to a 21-14 stint last year marking the fourth-largest turnaround among the nation's 351 Division I teams. The Cardinals shared the MAC West Division championship and made an appearance in the CIT which was the team's first postseason appearance since 2002. Coppin State trails the all-time series against Ball State 1-2.
Grant and the Coppin State men’s basketball program is coming off a 9-22 season a year ago and advanced to the quarterfinals round of the 2016 MEAC Basketball Tournament for the second straight season.
Tickets for the event, starting at $25 per session, are scheduled to go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 17 at noon PT.
The Middleweight division features undercard games to be played at home sites. Coppin State is paired up against Valparaiso on Monday, Nov. 14, Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and BYU on Thursday, Nov. 17.
