Bears Announce 2016-17 Non-Conference Schedule

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State men's basketball team has released its non-conference schedule for the 2016-17 season.
 
The year will open with a matchup at Houston Nov. 11, followed by three home contests against Towson Nov. 15, Wilmington Nov. 17 and Campbell Nov. 19. The Bears then hit the road for games at Brown Nov. 23 and Bowling Green Nov. 26, before returning to Hill Field House to host High Point Nov. 28.
 
The Bears open the month of December with a date at Rutgers Dec. 3, before hosting a pair of contests against Manhattan Dec. 6 and Wagner Dec. 10.  The remaining three non-conference games on the schedule will take place at Penn State Nov. 21, at Loyola Marymount Dec. 27 and at California State, Northridge Dec. 29.
 
Some more notes of the Bears' 2016-17 non-conference opponents:
 
Houston: Went 22-10 and fell to Tulane in the American Athletic Conference Championship … Also was defeated by Georgia Tech in the first round of the NIT Tournament ... Only previous meeting was an 72-57 win over Morgan State in the program's home opener inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Nov. 23, 2014.  The matchup was a part of the 2014 Cancun Challenge.

Towson: Posted a 20-13 record in 2015-16 before suffering a 90-72 setback to Oakland in the quarterfinals of the Vegas 16 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on March 28, 2016 ... The Tigers connected on 24-of-38 free throws to help hold off the Bears 69-61 in its home-opener on Nov. 16 … The Tigers lead the series 14-13 since the 1967-68 season and have won the last three meetings against the Bears.
 
Wilmington: Finished the 2015-16 season with a 9-19 record, including a 4-15 mark in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play … It will mark the first meeting between the schools … The CACC is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 14 institutions.
 
Campbell: Posted a 12-18 record a season ago and fell to Gardner-Webb (79-69) in the first round of the Big South Championship … Kyle Thomas scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Morgan State to its first win of the 2015-16 season with 59-54 victory over Campbell on Nov. 21. … The Bears lead the series 1-0.
 
Brown: Finished the 2015-16 season with an 8-20 record, including a 3-11 mark in The Ivy League … Brown also posted a 1-13 road record … It will mark the first meeting between the schools.
 
Bowling Green: Posted a 16-18 record and was 5-13 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) last season … The Falcons run at the MAC Championship … Tournament was ended in the semi-finals when they fell 80-66 to No. 1 seed Akron … It will mark the first meeting between the schools.

High Point: Finished with a 21-11 record, including a 13-5 mark in the Big South Conference … Fell to UNC Asheville, 80-69, in the Big South Tournament semifinals … Dropped an 88-66 decision to the South Carolina Gamecocks in NIT first round action Tuesday night in Colonial Life Arena … John Brown scored 30 points and High Point pulled away from Morgan State in the second half to win 82-72 at Millis Center in High Point, N.C. on Nov. 28, 2015 … Morgan State leads the series 2-1.
 
Rutgers: Posted a 7-25 record, including a 1-17 mark in the Big Ten … Fell to Nebraska, 89-72, in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis … The series between the teams is tied at 1-1 … It will mark the first meeting between the schools.
 
Manhattan: Finished the 2015-16 season with a 13-18 record and went 9-11 in the MAC … The Jaspers lost to Siena, 89-76, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 MAAC Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY ... Shane Richards made a career-high seven 3-pointers in matching his career-best of 28 points and Manhattan defeated the Bears 78-66 at Hill Field House on Dec. 20 ... This season will mark the fifth meeting between the teams and the Jaspers lead the series 3-1 since 2008.
 
Wagner: Completed the 2015-16 season with a 23-11 record and won the Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season championship by posting a 13-5 mark … The Seahawks fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 87-79, in the NEC Tournament Championship at the Spiro Sports Center in Staten Island … Wagner advanced to the second round of the NIT Tournament where they fell at Creighton 87-54 … Romone Saunders hit the first of two free throws with 3.2 seconds to help lift Wagner to a 62-61 victory over Morgan State at the Spiro Sports Center (Dec. 2) in the first meeting between the teams.
 
Penn State: Posted a 16-16 record, including a 7-11 mark in the Big Ten … The Nittany Lions fell to Ohio State, 79-75, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis … D.J. Newbill scored 17 points on 4-of-10 shooting to help Penn State beat Morgan State 61-48 in the 2014-15 season opener for both teams … This season will mark the sixth meeting between the teams and Penn State leads the series 5-0 since the 1985-86 season.
 
Loyola Marymount: Finished with a 14-17 record and was 6-12 in the West Coast Conference … Lost to Saint Mary's, 60-48, in the 2016 WCC Tournament Championship … Anthony Ireland scored a game-high 27 points and Ashley Hamilton added 20 to help beat Morgan State 79-62 at Gersten Pavilion for the Second Annual LMU Holiday Classic on Dec. 27, 2012 … Morgan State holds a 2-1 record against Loyola Marymount in school history.
 
California State, Northridge: Posted a 10-20 record and was 5-11 in the Big West Conference … Lost in triple overtime by a score of 87-83 to UC Davis at The Matadome … CSUN's Michael Warren scored a career-high 28 points to go with nine boards to help lift the Matadors to a 88-74 win against visiting Morgan State on Jan. 2, 2016 … CSUN holds a 3-0 record against Morgan State in school history.
