Six Spartans Named to VaSID Academic All-State Team

NORFOLK, Va. – Six Norfolk State student-athletes, including three seniors, were honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors this week when they were named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team for the 2015-16 academic year.

Norfolk State baseball had two players named to the academic team in Brian Beard and Angel Rosario. In addition, men’s basketball player Preston Bungei was named academic all-state on the men’s side, while women’s players Seana Moriarty (softball), Janay Frazier (volleyball) and Andrea Macchiavello (tennis) also earned a spot on the team.

Macchiavello earned the distinction for the third straight year, while each of the other five Spartans garnered academic all-state accolades for the first time.

Below are the NSU honorees with their name, 2015-16 classification, hometown, GPA, major and sport listed:

• Brian Beard, Jr., Chesapeake, Va., 3.81, Business Management, Baseball
• Preston Bungei, Jr., Albuquerque, N.M., 3.67, Business Management, Men’s Basketball
• Janay Frazier, Sr., Fredericksburg, Va., 3.68, Optical Engineering, Volleyball
• Andrea Macchiavello, Sr., Boca Raton, Fla., 3.87, Business Entrepreneurship, Women’s Tennis
• Seana Moriarty, So., Chesapeake, Va., 4.0, Applied Mathematics, Softball
• Angel Rosario, Sr., Bridgeport, Conn., 3.78, Sociology, Baseball

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be a sophomore or higher in standing. Schools were limited to nominating six student-athletes.

Beard and Moriarty were named this year’s NSU Male and Female Athletes of the Years, respectively, for having the highest GPAs among their respective genders. Macchiavello was also voted second-team All-MEAC.
