Hampton?s McCoy, Sobelewski Named First Team All-State

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Hampton University senior infielder Taylor McCoy and freshman outfielder Hope Sobelewski were each named First Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), it was announced on Thursday.

McCoy was a First Team All-MEAC selection this past season, after leading the team in batting with a .376 average. She also led the team with 56 hits and 13 doubles, while her 29 RBIs were third-most on the team. Slugging .463 and boasting a .434 on-base percentage, McCoy was also reliable in the field with a .993 fielding percentage.

She ranked tied for second in the MEACS in doubles, sixth in hits, and eighth in batting.

McCoy holds the school record for career doubles with 55, while she also ranks third in program history in career hits (224), tied for third in career RBIs (143), and ninth in career batting average (.370).

Sobelewski was named Second Team All-MEAC after ranking second on the team in batting (.336) and third in hits (45). Her 12 doubles were also the second-most on the team, and Sobelewski led the Lady Pirates with six home runs, a .575 slugging percentage, and .444 on-base percentage. Also, her 41 runs scored, a team high, ranked tied for third in the MEAC.

She also went the entire 2016 season without committing an error, recording 91 putouts and four assists.

Sobelewski had two different hitting streaks during the season – a season-long seven-game streak to close out the regular season and a six-game streak from March 19-31.

Jailyn Ford of James Madison was named VaSID Player of the Year, while her teammate Megan Good was named Pitcher of the Year. Mickey Dean, also from JMU, was named Coach of the Year, while Virginia Tech’s Lauren Duff was named Rookie of the Year.
