MEAC ANNOUNCES 2016 SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS SEEDINGS

NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host its 2016 Softball Championship on Thursday, May 12 through Saturday, May 14 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Florida. The Savannah State Lady Tigers and the Delaware State Lady Hornets will enter tournament play as the number one seeds.

Savannah State secured the southern divisional title with a 12-2 conference record, including a sweep over South Carolina State to end regular season play. The Lady Tigers are 24-21 on the season.

Delaware State enters tournament play with a 16-2 MEAC mark and a 23-16 overall record. The Lady Hornets sealed the regular season division title with a three-game sweep of Howard for their third straight regular-season crown.

Norfolk State is the number two seed after posting an 11-6 MEAC record. Hampton finished 11-7 and is the third seed, while Morgan State (8-8) earned the fourth and final slot from the northern division.

Bethune-Cookman (11-4) will enter tournament action as the number two seed in the south. Two-time defending MEAC tournament champion Florida A&M (11-4) is the third seed and North Carolina A&T State (6-9) earned the fourth seed.

The 2016 MEAC Softball Championship tournament begins Thursday, May 12, beginning at 10 a.m.

Savannah State (S1) will face Morgan State (N4), while Delaware State (N1) will meet North Carolina A&T State (S4) in the tournament’s first games. Game three will include Norfolk State (N2) versus Florida A&M (S3). Game four will feature Bethune-Cookman (S2) against Hampton (N3). Both games are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., also on Thursday.

Only the top four teams from each division will compete for the tournament title. Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Howard, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State were all eliminated from conference play based on their regular season finish.
