Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Delaware State softball team (27-16) wrapped up its successful 2016 regular season with a dominating road doubleheader sweep over the Rider Broncs (8-42) Sunday afternoon, 8-0 (six innings) and 11-3 (five innings).
In game one, the Hornets tallied 14 hits, highlighted by outfielder Nicole Gazzola going a perfect 4-for-4, in addition to scoring a game-high three runs. Gazzola also added a pair of stolen bases to her statline to push her career total to 100, making her only the second Hornet in program history to eclipse the century mark.
Catcher Sandy Hawthorne, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and a double. I
In fielder Chloe Oro also turned in a two-hit performance, along with infielder Vanessa Washington and outfielder Mika Lumsden. Senior Rochelle Sablay and sophomore Haley Jones, meanwhile, both registered an RBI-double to round DSU’s day at the plate.
Pitching wise, junior Nicole Brock (12-5) wrapped up her final start of 2016 with another dominating performance. Despite failing to record a strikeout, she surrendered four hits and a walk to secure her team-leading second shutout win of the season.
In game two, DSU once again tallied 14 hits, this time with eight different players reaching base.
Five different Hornets finished with two or more hits, led by senior Nkili Matthews. Freshman Sabrina Quarles, meanwhile, tallied a game-high four RBI, whereas four different Hornets scored twice.
In the circle, junior Tara Tursellino (13-7) allowed seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and tallied six strikeouts to register her team-leading 13th win of the season.
