Hampton Splits Doubleheader at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split a doubleheader with Norfolk State on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field, winning the first game 11-4 before falling 7-6 in the second game.

Before that loss, the Lady Pirates (19-25, 11-6 MEAC) picked up their seventh straight win.

In game one, junior Danielle Budden, freshman Sarah Kollas, and junior Kayla DeSchepper each had two hits to lead the Lady Pirates at the plate, with Kollas driving in a game-high four runs.

Freshman Allie Hotetz struck out seven and scattered four hits to pick up her 11th win of the season.

In game two, freshman Daniella Milloy went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game; senior Taylor McCoy and sophomore Jada Fields each had two hits.

Lady Eagles Swept by Aggies to Miss Playoffs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T State University completed a three-game series sweep of North Carolina Central University with a 3-2 and 8-5 wins in Saturday’s doubleheader at the NCAT Softball Complex.

The Aggies (17-28 Overall, 6-9 MEAC) clinched the fourth and final playoff position from the Southern Division for the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship, in two weeks.  The Lady Eagles (6-42, 2-13) were eliminated from MEAC Tourney consideration.

In game one, senior Jenny Tracy and junior Brianna Hampton both hit safely twice.

Junior Dominique Wilson went the distance for the Lady Eagles but suffered the loss due to the late unearned run. Wilson (0-11) fanned a season-high eight batters.

Zadaisha Young-Waddell only had one clean inning in her complete-game effort, but she wiggled out of several jams as NCCU left eight runners on base. Young-Waddell (5-15) issued three walks and only had two strikeouts before earning the win.

In game two, freshman Breanna Carter (0-2) took the loss despite only half of her six runs allowed being earned in 2 1/3 innings of work. Junior Jennifer Allison tossed the final 3 2/3 and gave up two runs (one earned). Allison registered four strikeouts and Carter logged a pair of K’s.

The Aggies edged NCCU, 9-7, in the hit column and three NCCU errors led to four total unearned runs.

Seven different Lady Eagles had one hit.

Lady Hawks Swept by Howard

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On a day where Coach Sam Douglas honored five Lady Hawks for Senior Day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team saw the special event spoiled as the Howard Lady Bison swept the twinbill.

UMES (11-30, 4-13 MEAC) dropped game one, 5-1, and then Howard (9-32, 5-12) rallied and produced 15 unanswered runs to take the nightcap, 15-6, at Hawks Field.

In game one, Maryland Eastern Shore managed only four hits. Senior Emily Diseroad earned her second career homer in the fourth and went 2-of-3 overall.

In game two, the Lady Hawks doubled their hit total from the first game. Junior Allison Anderson and freshman Sara Jo Whaley each collected two hits. Junior Ciara Schnyder came away with the biggest hit, launching a three-run blast over the left center fence.

Gartrell Paces Lady Eagles Softball to Victory Over Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. - Coppin State softball split a pair of games against rival Morgan State on Saturday. Pitcher Dakota Gartrell led the Lady Eagles to an 8-4 win in game two after tossing a complete game striking out one batter.

In game one, pitcher Megan Narvaez struck out three batters, walked three in 6.1 innings tossed. She also led the Lady Eagles at the plate with two hits. Both Cayla Brown and Melanie Benge also had two hits each while Danielle Smith finished with two RBIs.

In game two, Coppin State rebounded with an 8-4 win over rival Morgan State. The Lady Eagles hammered out 13 hits paced by a 3-for-4 effort at the plate by Smith. Smith finished with three hits, three runs scored, and a stolen base.

Freshman Melanie Benge added on a pair of hits along with freshman pitcher Dakota Gartrell. Gartrell picked up her third win of the season from the mound going a complete seven innings.
