Women's Tennis Recap: April 6

Hampton Tops Chowan 6-1
HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University tennis teams hosted Chowan University for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Pirates took down the Hawks 6-1 to put their record at 2-10 on the season.
In doubles, Hampton won the team point winning two of the three doubles matches.   At the top spot, Mariam Mitaishvii and Mikaela Pierce won 8-2 over Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova.   The third tandem of Daneya Charles and Anastasiia Romanova defeated Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva 8-3 to give Hampton a 1-0 team lead.
For singles, Hampton scored a couple three-set wins as the Lady Pirates took five of the six singles matches.   Slocombe won at number two singles defeating Cynthia Carrier 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Julia d’Auvergne won a pair of tiebreakers taking her match at number four singles over Jessica DeBackre 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).
The Lady Pirates are on the road this weekend in Pennsylvania as they take on Both teams are on the road this weekend for a pair of matches starting Friday afternoon at 12:30 when they take on Villanova University.

Bulldogs Take Down Lady Hawks
 

SALISBURY, Md. – Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Tennis Team closed out their six-match rodeo in Salisbury, Md. against the Bowie State (BSU) Bulldogs. The match took place at SU Indoor Tennis Courts on the campus of Salisbury University.

BSU defeated the Lady Hawks, 8-1, and improved to 5-3 overall while Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 0-7 on the season.

In doubles competition, senior Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) and sophomore Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) grabbed UMES’ lone point as they defeated Bowie’s No. 1 team, Amber Peters and Dainese Smothers, 8-6.

Maryland Eastern Shore’s No. 2 squad, Crystal Crook (Clinton, Md.) and DaTonya Price (Baltimore), scored twice against BSU’s Antonique Johnson and Sharaya Dunwell before falling, 8-2.

King dropped her singles match against Peters, 8-4. Price scored once against Dunwell before falling, 8-1. Newcomer Tearraney Peak (Cheltenham, Md.) recorded three points before losing her match to Bowie’s Selena Slaughter, 8-3.

On April 8, the Lady Hawks begin a nine-match road trip against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Howard. Match-time is set for 2 p.m.

Hornets Extend Winning Streak To Seven With 5-2 Win At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa.--- The Delaware State women’s tennis team has now won seven straight matches after a 5-2 victory over Lafayette at the Northwood Racquet Club Wednesday.
The Hornets won four of the six singles matches and captured the doubles point by winning two of the three contests.
In the singles competition, Elvira Galieva, Maria Rachi, Aayushi Chouhan and Colleen Beck posted straight set wins.
Galieva was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Rocine Moschella in the No. 3 contest, while Rachi upended Megan Reiling 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Galieva has won six straight singles contests and has dropped just two games in her last nine sets.
Chouhan and Beck were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Galieva and Beck also teamed up for a 6-0 victory in the No. 3 doubles match. Rachi and Milan Graves pulled out a 7-6 win in the No. 2 doubles contest.
The Hornets will close out the regular season at St. Joseph’s on Apr. 12.
The 2016 MEAC Tournament is set for Apr. 21-23 in Norfolk, Va.
