Morgan State Softball Scores Six Runs In The Sixth To Defeat UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Morgan State softball team extended its season-long winning streak to four straight, following a 6-1 non-conference victory over cross-town rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Morgan State (9-20) improved to 2-22 all-time against the Retrievers, while UMBC (16-21) dropped its fifth straight game.

Morgan State sophomore pitcher Amy Begg (6-8), pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits, three walks. Begg also threw a season-high 10 strikeouts, surpassing the eight strikeouts she recorded last month in a game against Mount St. Mary’s (3/11), which was also played at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Senior Kimber Salvas and junior Kate Vosper each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and RBI to lead Morgan State. Salvas also recorded three of the team’s six stolen bases. 

Morgan State will return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend when it travels to Norfolk, Va. to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State.

UMES Splits Doubleheader With George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – After a tough outing against Norfolk State, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team rebounded with a non-conference split at George Mason.

Patriots (15-14) took game one, 3-1, but the Lady Hawks held on to win the nightcap, 3-2.

In game one, Mason’s Gabriella Lopez held the Lady Hawks to only two hits. Junior Allison Anderson registered both hits and picked up her sixth multi-hit performance of the season.

In the circle, senior Kaitlyn Hitch gave Maryland Eastern Shore an opportunity to win as she held the Patriots to three runs (two earned). Hitch ended her afternoon going six innings while scattering six hits.

Lopez tossed a complete game for the Patriots, going seven innings and a strikeout.

In game two, UMES produced only three hits as Mason’s tandem, Sarah Kleinfelter and Marina Vitalich, kept the Lady Hawks’ bats under control. Freshman Mackenzie Brown senior Vanessa Gomez and junior Ciara Schnyder each recorded a hit.

Despite only three hits, the club capitalized on the Patriots’ five miscues.

UMES’ sophomore pitcher Adrienne Guerra would hold off Mason’s late comeback as she sat down all three batters in the seventh. She earned her sixth victory of the season after tossing her 13th complete game of the year.

Delaware State Falls to Delaware in Doubleheader

NEWARK, Del.

Wednesday afternoon, the Delaware State softball team (14-16) was unable to pull off a victory in a pair of games on the road against the Delaware Blue Hens (22-12), with the Hornets falling 8-7 and 9-3.

The two losses for DSU snapped a three-game winning streak, whereas UD has now won seven in a row, in addition to moving to 3-1 against the Hornets this year.  

In game one, Tara Tursellino allowed eight hits, six earned, three walks and fanned six UD batters to pick up the loss.

As a team, the Hornets tallied six hits, with Chloe Oro and Sandy Hawthorne registering a pair.  Outfielder Nicole Gazzola, who is DSU’s season leader in batting (.450), hits (50), runs (36), stolen bases (23) and on-base percentage (.460), went 1-for-4 and a run scored to extend her streak of scoring at least once and registering a hit to 10 games.

In game two, DSU tallied more hits than the Blue Hens (11-9), led by Oro going 3-for-4.  Gazzola extended her streak to a season-best 11 with a 2-for-4 effort, but failed to score for the first time in 10 games.  For UD, Leanna Gearhart, Mariah Kondravy and outfielder Gabby Klecko all tallied two hits, while Gearhart had three stolen bases and Gabby Klecko tallied two.

Pitching wise, DSU’s Nicole Brock (7-5) surrendered four earned runs, two walks and tallied two strikeouts in her team-leading sixth complete game of the season, while Kiersten Coffman allowed three earned runs, two walks and struck out three.
