WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. --- The Delaware State women’s tennis team stretched its win streak to six, topping Monmouth 4-2 at the MU Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
The Hornets won three of the six singles matches and captured the doubles point by taking two of three contests to improve to 9-3 overall this spring.
Elvira Galieva turned in the most impressive singles performance for the Hornets, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Chioma Gabriel in the No. 3 contest. Galieva also teamed with Yelyzaveta Bessonova for a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles match.
DSU’s Maria Rachi won in straight sets at No. 4, topping Kendal Kauffman 6-4, 6-4, while Colleen Beck needed three sets for a come-from-behind win over Monmouth’s Grace Wills at No. 6. Wills won the first set 6-3 before Beck stormed back for 6-1 and 6-2 victories in sets two and three.
Rachi and Beck also posted a doubles victory for the Hornets, winning 6-3 in the No. 3 contest.
Delaware State’s Aayushi Chouhan won the first set of the No. 5 contest 7-6, but the match could not be completed.
The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday at Lafayette in Easton, Pa.
