BALTIMORE, Md. -- Evan Ward celebrated 'Senior Day' with wins in both singles and doubles while leading the Morgan State men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over Coppin State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Greenspring Racquet Club in Lutherville, Md.
With the win, Morgan State earned its fifth-straight victory and improved to 8-9 overall and 3-0 in MEAC play. Coppin State falls to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in league matches.
"It feels great to win another conference match, and it was 'Senior Day' for Evan Ward," said MSU coach Matt Townes. "He [Ward] played tremendously today and we look to his leadership for the remainder of the season."
At No. 1 doubles, Jeremy Field and Arjun Ramakrishnan defeated Christian Duchnak and Gabriel Franca, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, Ward and Lucas Krusinski earned another shutout with a 6-0 win over Andres Diaz and Gavin Lewis.
In singles, Morgan State earned wins at the No. 1 thru No. 5 spots. Coppin State's sole point in singles was credited to Zapo Dula as a result of forfeit because the Bears only had five players in attendance.
"We played well, even short handed today," added Townes. "We move forward with our goal."
At No. 1 singles, Field defeated Christian Duchnak, 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, Ward pasted Gabriel Franca to earn a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Ramakrishnan defeated Lewis at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, and Krusinki added to the list of shutout victories with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Ross Olexa at No. 4. Coppin State earned its only points of the afternoon at No. 5, where Sagar Sathyanarayan was defeated by Diaz, 1-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Morgan State will hit the road to take on Bucknell in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Bucknell Tennis Courts.
