Hampton Closes Out Weekend With 7-0 Win Over Coppin State

HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University men’s tennis team closed out a busy weekend as they shutout Coppin State 7-0 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division matchup Sunday at Neilson-Screen Stadium.

In doubles, the Pirates took all three matches losing a total of five games.   At the top line, Peter Odegbami and Fedor Shirin scored a 6-2 win over Christian Duchnak and Gabriel Franca.   Matthew Foster-Estwick and Joshua McQueen won at the number two line over Andres Diaz and Gavin Lewis 6-3.  In the third slot, Charles Hudson and Miguel Suarez won 6-0 over Ross Olexa and Zaipo Oula.

During singles, Hampton scored straight set wins throughout the lineup.   Foster-Estwick defeated Duchnak 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot, while Shirin took out Franca 6-0, 6-1 at number two.  Hudson took a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lewis at number three and his doubles partner Suarez won 6-0, 6-0 over Oula at number four.  Anthony Acholonu was taken to a first set tie-breaker at number five singles winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 over Diaz.  Gary Faulcon won at number six over Olexa 6-1, 6-4.

Hampton (5-10, 2-1) will now head to Pennsylvania for a pair of matches starting Friday against Villanova at 1:30 pm.

Men's Tennis wins fourth straight with 5-2 victory over Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior Sagar Sathyanarayanan clinched Morgan State University men's tennis team's fourth straight victory as the Bears knocked off the Howard Bison 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation Southeast DC Campus. 

It not only marks MSU's longest winning streak of the season, it's also the Bears' longest winning streak since 2008 -- a season in which they recorded eight consucutive wins.

Sathyanarayanan fought back to earn a 6-2, 0-6, 10-8 decision over Nico Sorrell at No. 6 singles.

Morgan State's (7-9) duo of sophomore Lucas Krusinski and senior Evan Ward did win at No. 3 doubles, but Morgan State lost at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Treajh Ferguson fell to Ismael Kaoache 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, but outside of that it was all Blue & Orange for the rest of the afternoon. The Bears posted victories in five of the six singles matches.

Freshman Jeremy Field defeated William Jones 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, while Ward made quick work beating Laguna Foster 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. 

At No. 4 singles, freshman Arjun Ramakrishnan held on to a  6-3, 6-2 over Myron Davis and Krusinski cruised to a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory against Spencer Kelly at No. 5.

Morgan State will return to action on Tuesday, April 5 with a home contest against cross-town rival Coppin State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the MSU Tennis Courts.
