Hampton Drops Indoor Twinbill

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Hampton University men’s tennis team moved both of its scheduled Saturday matches to inside at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News and lost both matches.  In the opener they fell 4-3 to North Carolina Central University, while in the nightcap Virginia Wesleyan College defeated Hampton 6-1 as the Pirates dropped their record to 4-10 on the season.

In doubles against NCCU, the Pirates started with one match in hand as NCCU only had five players, so the third line of doubles was a forfeit win to Hampton.   At the top spot,  the tandem of Peter Odegbami and Fedor Shirin clinched the doubles point for Hampton with a 6-2 win over Gabriel Cucalon and Davide Callegari.

In singles competition, the visitors took wins in the first four spots of singles.  Callegari and Odegbami went to three sets at the third spot with Callegari taking a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory.   Joshua McQueen gave Hampton its lone contested singles victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dillon Strepay at the fifth spot of singles.

In the nightcap with the Marlins, Hampton won at the top doubles line with the tandem of Odegbami and Shirin defeating Graham Wilson and Adam Rosemblaum 8-2.  VWC took the other two matches 8-6 and 8-4 to win the doubles point.

Singles saw the Marlins take wins in the first five spots as the top three matches all went three sets with VWC earning the points.   In each of those matches, Hampton won the first set but lost the next two.  Winning for Hampton in singles was Charles Hudson who scored a 6-3, 6-4 win at the sixth spot.
