NCCU Drops Home Match With Longwood

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Aissa Muamba and freshman Jasmine Gabriel picked up wins for host North Carolina Central University in a 5-2 non-conference women’s tennis loss to visiting Longwood University at the NCCU Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers moved to 8-10 overall and the Lady Eagles slipped to 3-10.

Muamba and Gabriel dominated their singles matches, losing just two games apiece. Muamba conquered her top-flight opposition 6-2, 6-0 and Gabriel was successful by a 6-0, 6-2 margin on the fourth court.

Muamba moved over .500 on the season at 6-5. Gabriel improved her rookie ledger to 3-9.

Longwood swept doubles and won the other four singles bouts in straight sets.

NCCU will host Appalachian State University in its Senior Day match on Sunday at 1 p.m.

King Earns Hawks’ Lone Point In Loss To Coppin State
SALISBURY, Md. 
– Due to Saturday morning’s inclement weather, Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Tennis Team moved their home match versus Coppin State (CSU) to Salisbury University. The contest was held inside the SU Indoor Tennis Center in Salisbury, Md.

Maryland Eastern Shore dropped their match against the Eagles, 5-1. Senior Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) picked up the Lady Hawks’ lone point in the loss.

With the setback, UMES fell to 0-5 (0-2 MEAC) overall whereas CSU moved to 2-7 (1-2 MEAC) on the season.

In singles play, King served as the club’s No. 1 player and faced the Eagles’ Ashley Milo. The Maryland native took the open set, 6-3, but Milo rallied to win the second set, 7-6. King came back and scored the most points to win the match (12-10, 10-1); thus, picking up her first win of the season.

Sophomore DaTonya Price (Baltimore) battled CSU’s Miranda Taylor in a matchup of No. 3 seeds. Price won multiple games, but fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).

In doubles competition, King and sophomore Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) took on the Eagles’ Milo and Carentxa Goede. The ladies fought, but CSU’s duo were too much as they fell, 6-3.

Price and senior Crystal Crook (Clinton, Md.) served as the squad’s No. 2 team and scored twice before falling to Coppin State’s Taylor and Precious Udofe, 6-2.

Maryland Eastern Shore continues its rodeo in Emmitsburg, Md. where Mount St. Mary’s awaits. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
