Hampton Comes Alive in Doubleheader Sweep of Eagles
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team erupted for a combined 21 runs and 36 hits in Saturday’s doubleheader against Coppin State at the CSU Softball Complex, winning the first game 11-7 before taking the second game 10-9 in nine innings.
The Lady Pirates (17-24, 9-5 MEAC) have won five straight games.
In game one, freshman Hope Sobelewski and sophomore Jada Fields each went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game, with Sobelewski driving in a season-high five runs and scoring twice. Junior Danielle Budden scored three times.
Freshman Allie Hotetz struck out two in picking up her eighth win of the season.
In game two, senior Diamond Ponds went 4-for-5 at the plate in the second game, while Budden, Sobelewski, freshman Sarah Kollas, and junior Kayla DeSchepper each added three hits. Sobelewski drove in a team-high three runs.
Hotetz pitched the last three innings to pick up her ninth win of the season, striking out three.

Hornets Down Bison in Doubleheader
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State softball team (22-16, 15-2 MEAC) continued its winning ways by defeating the Howard Bison (7-31, 3-11 MEAC) on the road in a doubleheader, 6-1 and 14-1 (five innings).
With these victories, the Hornets have now won 11 consecutive conference games, in addition to churning out eight straight victories overall. Howard, on the other hand, has now dropped 15 in a row to the Hornets, with its last victory occurring way back on April 3, 2011 (6-1).
In game one, junior Nicole Brock moved to 8-5 on the year with a stellar performance, allowing six hits, one walk, no earned and tallying seven strikeouts.
DSU tallied seven hits, led by the MEAC’s leader in that department, Nicole Gazzola (66), going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored
In game two, Delaware State tied a season-high in hits (16), along with scoring double-digits runs for the 11th time this season. The Hornets also connected for a season-high four home runs, with two coming off the bat of Stamps (4).
As a team, nine different Hornets tallied at least one hit, led by Gazzola and Sandy Hawthorne both totaling three each. Scoring wise, Gazzola, Chloe Oro, Hawthorne, Haley Jones and Jordan Stamps all touched home plate twice.
In the circle, junior Tara Tursellino (12-7) turned in another solid performance, allowing five hits, no earned runs, no walks and fanning five HU batters. Tursellino is now a perfect 8-0 in MEAC play with a 1.49 ERA and a team-high 52 strikeouts.

Lady Hawks Swept by Morgan State
DUNDALK, Md. – Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team were swept in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader at Morgan State (MSU).
MSU (12-24, 7-6 MEAC) won game one in extras, 2-1, and followed up with an impressive performance in the nightcap, 7-0.
Game one witnessed a pitching duel between UMES’ sophomore Adrienne Guerra and Morgan State’s Amy Begg.
For Guerra, she tossed seven innings and struck out nine Lady Bears in the loss.
In game two, UMES’ offensive woes continued as they produced only four hits.
With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks dipped to 10-26 (3-11 MEAC) on the season.
SCSU and NCCU Split Doubleheader
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Both games of a doubleheader split between MEAC southern division foes North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University came down to the final inning.
Dominique Wilson went 4-for-7 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored to top NCCU in the doubleheader. Kayleigh Brueck had three hits with two doubles two RBI and two runs scored, London Booker tallied three hits and a team-best three RBI, and Casey Hargett contributed three singles and a run scored for the Lady Eagles on Saturday.
In game one, NCCU scored two runs in the seventh inning for a 4-3 win, the Lady Eagles first conference victory of the season.
Booker not only drove in the eventual game-winning run for NCCU, she also struck out six batters to earn the pitching victory.
In game two, S.C. State rallied from a six-run deficit, including three runs in the last frame, to edge the visitors 7-6.
After not committing an error in Saturday’s opener, NCCU had five errors in game two, resulting in four unearned runs.
NCCU is now 5-39 overall with a 1-10 record in conference play, while SCSU is 5-23 overall and 2-9 in the MEAC.
