LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampton University guards Quinton Chievous and Reginald Johnson, Jr. were each named Second Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), when the VaSID All-State Teams were announced on Friday.
The teams and awards were voted on by VaSID member institutions.
Chievous was a First Team All-MEAC selection this past season, leading the conference in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and ranking in the top five in the MEAC in scoring (17.0 ppg). He had 12 double-doubles on the season, including a career-best 29-point, 23-rebound effort at Winthrop.
He also had 29 points against Delaware State on Feb. 29. Chievous, who averaged 15.0 points and 9.7 rebounds in the MEAC Tournament, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
He was BoxToRow’s National Player of the Week on Jan. 27.
Johnson was named First Team All-MEAC and the MEAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, ranking second in the MEAC in scoring with 18.1 points per game. He had two 30-point games on the season, including a career-high 35 points at Northern Arizona on Dec. 2.
He also had 30 points against Washington Adventist. Johnson was also third in the MEAC in steals and sixth in assists. Johnson averaged 19.3 points and 8.3 assists per game in the MEAC Tournament, and he dished out a MEAC Tournament record-tying 13 assists in the quarterfinals against Morgan State.
Chievous and Johnson were the driving force behind a 2015-16 campaign that saw the Pirates win 21 games, pick up their first MEAC regular season title since 2002, and win their second straight MEAC Tournament championship.
Hampton faced top-seeded Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Both players were also NABC First Team All-District 15 selections this past season, and they were also Div. I HBCU All-Americans as named by BoxToRow.
Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon was named VaSID University Division Player of the Year, while the Cavaliers’ Tony Bennett earned Coach of the Year honors. George Mason’s Otis Livingston II was named Rookie of the Year.
