NCCU?s Three Perfect Scores Highlight APR Growth

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA’s announcement of Academic Progress Rate results on Wednesday shows that North Carolina Central University has made significant improvement in its APR.

NCCU’s most recent multiyear APR, which includes data from 2011-12 through 2014-15, is an average of 972 out of a possible 1000 for its 13 sports programs. That’s an increase from 956 in 2013-14 and 941 in 2012-13.

In this year’s report, NCCU has three teams with a perfect multiyear APR of 1,000: women’s cross country, women’s tennis and women’s track and field. The last time NCCU had a team with a perfect score was men’s golf in 2009-10.

Other top performing teams for NCCU were baseball and women’s volleyball with multiyear APR scores of 997 and 994, respectively.

NCCU’s academic growth is featured in an article by the NCAA discussing the trend of limited-resource institutions. (http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/limited-resource-schools-hbcus-continue-apr-improvement-trend)

Last Wednesday, four NCCU sports programs – baseball, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track & field – were among 12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams to earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of their sport.

In that announcement, NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree said, "I am so very proud of our student-athletes on this esteemed recognition by the NCAA. I have to also commend the coaches of these programs and our Student-Athlete Academic Support Services team for their leadership and commitment to academic excellence."
