Hampton Completes Sweep of UMES
HAMPTON, Va. – With a 4-3 win over Maryland Eastern Shore to close out the 2016 home slate on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, the Hampton University softball team completed a three-game sweep in the series.
The Lady Pirates improved to 15-24 overall and 7-5 in MEAC play.
Freshman Hope Sobelewski got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth, hitting her second home run in as many days – a solo shot just shy of the scoreboard in left field to put Hampton up 1-0.
She now has three home runs on the season.
UMES mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, stringing together three hits and taking advantage of an error to cut the gap to 4-3. But a fielder’s choice to third ended the rally and gave the Lady Pirates the win.
Sophomore Jada Fields led the Lady Pirates with two hits.
Freshman Allie Hotetz picked up her seventh win of the season in the circle, giving up five hits in 6.2 innings. Fields came in to pick up the save, her first of the season.

Savannah State Wins Series against FAMU
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (18-18, 8-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) takes over first place after winning the series against Florida A&M University (22-24, 10-2 MEAC) with a 3-2 win in the final game of the series Sunday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field. The win is the Lady Tigers eighth win in the last nine games.
Junior left fielder Chasney Jenkins led the team going 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate, while freshman third baseman Cortni Jones added a solo home run to continue her eight game hitting streak and senior second baseman recorded a hit and a run scored to continue her five game hitting streak.
On the mound, junior pitcher Amanda Hallman (10-9) went the distance giving up two unearned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Six Rattlers recorded a hit with Jessica Nathan, Tashay Irvis, Taylor Rosier, Raven Moseley, Denise Anderson and Whitney Farris each recorded a hit, while Moseley and Nathan scored twice.
On the mound, Kenya Pereira (11-12) picked up the loss pitching the first 3.1 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits with five walks, while Tahlia Snider pitched the final 2.2 shutout innings giving up only one hit with two walks.

Spartan Softball Wins Rubber Match over Howard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Norfolk State softball team needed an extra inning at the end of the day, but the Spartans scored a pair of runs late to top Howard by a 4-2 margin on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Youth Academy.
The rubber match of the series saw NSU rally from one run down later in the game. After holding off the Bison in the seventh, the Spartans finally went ahead for good in the eighth.
Spartan starter Megan Przeslawski struck out six and allowed five hits and two unearned runs to even her record at 4-4.
Senior Whitney Williams finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Przeslawski also had two of the team's five hits in the game, while senior Megan Dunning drove in two runs on two sac flies.
Jasmine Gammons had two of Howard's five hits as well. Howard starter Janessa Flynn (4-12) took the loss despite giving up five hits and four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts in all eight innings.

Cardinals Complete Series Sweep over the Lady Eagles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A University of Louisville pitcher held the North Carolina Central University softball team to just one hit for a second straight game as the host Cardinals finished off a three-game series sweep of the Lady Eagles with an 8-0 win in six innings Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
Junior Maryssa Becker earned her second shutout against NCCU in as many days with her one-hit gem. Becker (17-6) – an All-ACC selection each of her first two seasons with the Cardinals – fanned seven Lady Eagles and did not surrender a walk in her six innings of work.
Junior Dominique Wilson suffered the loss for the Lady Eagles, allowing four runs on just three hits and three walks over three innings of work. Freshman Breanna Carter was tagged for four runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief, but only one of those runs were earned.

Hornets Dominate with Series Sweep over Morgan State
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Delaware State softball team (20-16, 13-2 MEAC) continued its winning ways with a third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series sweep, this time defeating the Morgan State Bears (10-23, 5-6 MEAC) on the road 9-1 (five innings), 11-2 (five innings) and 8-0 over the weekend.
In game one, the Hornets finished with nine hits, led by Sandy Hawthorne's 2-for-3 performance, which included a double. Also, nine different Hornets scored, while Vanessa Washington extended her streak to a season-high 10 games. Outfielder Nicole Gazzola, who coming into the weekend held the nation's ninth best batting average (.471), went 1-for-4 with a run scored, in addition to tallying her conference-best 29th stolen base.
Pitching wise, reliever Nicole Brock (8-5) tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and fanning three Bears to pick up the win, after replacing starter Tara Tursellino (10-7).
In game two, sophomore Jessica Shalongo (1-2) picked up her first victory of the season, allowing four hits, four walks, two earned runs and tallying one K in three innings of work. Freshman Alexis Goldsby (0-2), meanwhile, tossed the final two frames, allowing no hits, no runs and two walks.
In game three, DSU tallied 10 hits, headlined by Chloe Oro, Hawthorne, Haley Jones and designated player Sabrina Quarles all registering two. Quarles also tallied her first stolen base of the season to round out her best game of 2016.
