PHILADELPHIA, Pa. & ABINGTON, Pa. – Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Tennis Team continued its long road trip in Pennsylvania where they lost both contest to Temple and Penn State Abington (PSA).
In their morning contest against the Owls, Maryland Eastern Shore was blanked, 6-0.
Temple (11-4) performed flawlessly as the Lady Hawks were unable to score. UMES dropped each singles match in straight sets (6-0, 6-0).
In the afternoon, PSA (9-3) also blanked the Lady Hawks, 9-0.
In singles competition, Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) served as the club’s No. 1 player and took Penn State’s Hegarty Honora to the limit. After dropping the first set, 6-2, the Maryland native rebounded and won the second set, 6-3. Hergarty would hold on to win the deciding set, 10-8.
Sophomore DaTonya Price (Baltimore) faced PSA’s Gabrielle Eberhardt and scored multiple points; however, Eberhardt would be too much as she won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
Newcomers Tearraney Peak (Cheltenham, Md.) and Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.) each earned a point in their respective matches, but also lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles play, King and sophomore Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) tallied three points against Penn State’s Amanda Shuski and Janie Saile before falling, 8-3.
Price and Crystal Crook (Clinton, Md.) recorded a point before suffering defeat, 8-1.
With the setbacks, UMES dipped to 0-15 on the season.
On Saturday, Maryland Eastern Shore concludes its 2016 campaign in Baltimore where they will meet in-state foe Coppin State in a rematch. First-serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
